Image size options not available – images too small

  • I’m using the Publish theme. I’m not getting a size option for images. I want to publish them as large as possible as in the theme example but they seem to be restricted to medium.

    Can anyone help please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • This blog is a free hosted WordPress.COM blog with no blogger created content http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/wu-wei/

Post an active link starting with http:// to the exact blog in question please.

  • Hi Timethief – is the above a response to my question about Publish? Forgive me for being dumb but I’m not sure what you mean. I’ve been trying to contact the theme creator for the last three hours to get some help with this problem and have been going round in circles.
    My blog is http://snapshotsbylaini.wordpress.com
I’m sorry but this is a bit of maze to me :(

  • Thanks for posting the blog URL. Don’t waste time trying to contact the theme creator. The theme does not display image differently that every other theme here does.

The main column width is 525 pixels, so you cannot upload any image that exceeds that width. If you do the software will reduce size to fit.

Go to Dashboard > scroll down to Settings > Click “Media”
    Image sizes
The sizes listed below determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when inserting an image into the body of a post.

  • I apologize. I’m visually challenged and did not proofread before I clicked submit. This sentence: “The theme does not display image differently that every other theme here does. ” ought to be replaced with: “The theme does not display images differently than every other theme here does.”

  • :) Thanks – I understood what you meant and thanks so much for coming back to me. I’m a bit disappointed because the image on the example looks exactly like I want mine to look. Can I be cheeky and ask if you could recommend a theme that will allow me to display large images?
    Thank you so much!

  • For photoblogging themes see http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/subjects/photography/

All themes are showcased and have theme descriptions and live demo sites here http://wordpress.com/themes/

Or simply choose the theme you used before please.

Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes
browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate”
or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appears

After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

  • YIKES! I have apologize again. This time it’s for including this sentence above: “Or simply choose the theme you used before please.” Please ignore it. :(

  • Lol :) Thank you – you’ve been really helpful. I looked at the photography themes and have chosen one of those. Thanks so much!

  • Best wishes with your blog. :)

  • I’m not getting a size option for images. I want to publish them as large as possible as in the theme example but they seem to be restricted to medium.

When you are about to insert an image in a post, you get four size options: thumbnail, medium, large and full size. Full size means original size, if the original is narrower than the maximum that can fit in the content area, or downsized to that maximum, if the original is wider.
The default widths for the other three options are set by you in Settings > Media, and they should depend on the width of the content area of the particular theme you’re using (for instance, you’d set the width for the large option to about 3/4 of the content width, and the medium option to about 1/2 of the content width.
A size option will be greyed out if the image you upload is narrower than the default for that option. For example, if you’ve set the “medium” width to 400 and the “large” width to 600, and you upload a 500px wide image, the “medium” option will be available but the “large” option naturally won’t.

  • Hi Justpi
Many thanks for getting back to me. I wasn’t getting the sizing options because the theme restricted the size of the images.
I’ve now changed themes and the images are looking good.
I appreciate your help and advice – thank you.

  • You’re welcome.
But you’re not right about Publish: it doesn’t “restrict” anything in a way that the other themes don’t. These are the options you get when you are about to insert an image you have uploaded to your blog:
    http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/image-settings1.png
They show up no matter what the theme, and they work the same way on all themes (with a single exception, and that exception isn’t Publish). If you weren’t seeing these options before, you were on the wrong dashboard screen or you had a browsr issue.

  • Well, I guess I must have had a browser issue because the options most definitely weren’t there. I use WordPress for my website so I know where to look for them and I had no trouble finding them on my new theme.
I was a bit surprised because the image in the example looks exactly how I wanted mine to look.
Thanks again for your help :)

  • You’re welcome Elaine and best wishes for happy blogging.
