Images missing after importing from wordpress.org to wordpress.com

  1. Hello,

This thing is driving me crazy. I am trying to move a blog from a wordpress.org installation to wordpress.com. I exported the blog in XML format and I imported it in the new wordpress.com blog.

The only problem is that out of more than 700 images, only less than 500 were imported!

This is the media section in the original wordpress.org blog:

This is the media section in the new wordpress.com blog:

    Can you help me?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is mariolonzadotcom.wordpress.com.

  2. Has it been 24 hours since the import began? It can sometimes take the media files a while to come over.

  3. It has been almost 24 hours but unfortunately nothing changed...the images are still missing :(

  4. Sigh, sob, nobody here can help me?

  5. Ok, try importing the content again. It won't duplicate existing content, and may pick up what it missed.

  6. Thanks for the suggestion! We are coming closer to the solution. I followed what you said and imported the XML again. Now the images seem to be there but many of them are unattached. For example, in the original blog only 81 images were unattached, while in the new blog 361 images are unattached.

For example, the most recent ones are unattached.

See this screenshot of the new blog:

  7. In that case, it would see like the attachment values were never properly saved on the WordPress.org end.

You could continue with them unattached or re-upload them to attach. Attachment is only required is you use a Gallery or Slideshow.

  8. I see, so this would not be important. The only problem I have now is that many images' URLs were not properly converted into the new blog. If you take a look at the new blog's URL, you'll see that most of the images are not visible, even if now they are in the media section of the blog.

Take a look, for example, at the HMTL of the most recent post. It still shows links to the old blog, with the wordpress.org file structure. As soon as I add the wordpress.com nameservers to my mariolonza.com domain name, the images will not be visible anymore :(

    <p style="text-align:center;">Questa è la storia di un calzino...</p>
    <p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-3541" title="Calzino" src="http://www.mariolonza.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Calzino-1024x788.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="378" /></p>
<p style="text-align:center;">...che un bel giorno ebbe la sventura di bucarsi. Ma da quel buchino è nato un grazioso personaggio, ve lo presento, si chiama Mr. Face!</p>
    <p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-3542" title="Mr. Face" src="http://www.mariolonza.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Mr.-Face-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" width="491" height="491" /></p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Ha l'espressione biricchina questo Mr. Face, missà che presto ne farà delle belle!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Intanto vi auguro un buon week end!</p>

  9. Ah, that is very odd, perhaps something was corrupt in the export file. In this case, I recommend just re-inserting the images.

  10. Ouch it's gonna take forever, there are more than 100 posts, all with missing images :(

  11. If you'd like, I could empty out the whole blog, then you can try the import again from a fresh export file.

  12. That would help. Let's see if we can fix this problem. Thank you so much for all your help! Let me know when you are done and I can try again from the beginning! Just to be sure, when I export from the wordpress.org is there anything in particular I should be aware of?

  13. I have emptied your blog as requested.

This time, try disabling all plugins and switching to the Twenty Eleven theme on the WordPress.org blog when exporting the file and during the entire import process.

  14. Unfortunately it did not work :(

I have deactivated all plugins on the wordpress.org blog. I switched to Twenty Eleven on the same blog and then exported everything.

I then switched on Twenty Eleven in the wordpress.com blog and imported the file. On the first try, only 485 images were imported. I then imported the file again and all the images were finally imported.

But the links in each and every blog still point to the old URL and not to the new wordpress.com blog :(

    Any new idea?

  15. Not at this point, no. Were the missing images (the ones that disappear when the domain switches) attached or unattached?

  16. Interesting, it seems like that the links are getting fixed by themselves...maybe the import tool is still working in the background. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

  17. Oh, that's good to hear! Hopefully it will correct everything in the next 24 hours.

  18. @macmanx

Hi, would you have time to look at my issue also?

Seems like a bug/limitation in the importing process?
