For the past couple of hours the image loader has proved temperamental. I'm doing nothing out of the ordinary when uploading images, which do reach the Media Gallery. But when I click the "insert into post" button the dropdown window turns white and nothing is inserted into the psot - however many times I refresh, save and go through the motions again. Something up at the WP end?

Are you aware that page loading time is a page ranking factor? Please go here > Settings > Reading and reduce the number of posts displaying on your front page as it's taking a long time to load and I have a fast connection.
What you are describing is most likely to be a browser issue and that means you need to try troubleshooting by force clearing your browser cache and cookies If your browser version is outdated you can upgrade your browser version.
