I'm moving from Squarespace to WordPress.com
Squarespace exports as Movable Type.
Uploading the file under Tools, Import appears to work, and I receive the confirmation email that it was successful.
But the imported entries (there should be at least 22-24 of them) do not show up on the blog or dashboard.
Would having the blog set to private cause this problem?

Yes, the private status may be interfering. Would you please try importing again with it set as public?
Ok, I tried with not private - same results
I did find a different fix - I have a friend who has a self-hosted WordPress install. I sent the Moveable Type export file to him. He was able to import it successfully. He then exported it as a WordPress .xml file. I was able to take that file and import it successfully into my WordPress.com blog.
That doesn't solve the problem of why WordPress.com wouldn't import the Moveable Type file directly, but it does show that the file wasn't the problem.
