Imported xml from Posterous doesn't display accents correctly

  1. I backed up a blog in French from posterous and when I imported it into WordPress the accents were replaced by ???. I am led to believe this is because the xml file from Posterous wasn't encoded correctly but I don't know how to fix this. Could anyone advise please?

The blog I need help with is moodlefairyenfrancais.wordpress.com.

I am having the same problem, with a Posterous blog originally in Brazilian portuguese. Any help on this matter would be highly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  3. Hi there. Since I posted, I found another post on the same topic here http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/complete-emptying-blog?replies=11#post-1156932 and the response is that it is a Posterous issue and there isn't much at present we can do to fix our files. I did see on another blog here someone had managed to reconfigure the corrupted xml file so that it worked again, but it seemed complex to me and I think for my own blog which only has about 28 entries I am just going to go in manually and put the accents back. I accept that isn't a good solution for people with long blogs, however.

  4. Hi all, since this topic was originally created, Posterous developers made some changes to the backup tool, and our developers tweaked our importer.

Please download the latest version of the Posterous backup and try the import again. For your reference, import instructions are here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-posterous/

If you run into any issues, please let me know!

  5. Thanks very much for your reply -the support here is very good! Just a pity it came today as I spent a couple of hours manually changing the accents on my blog so I don't need to do this now - but I shall be interested to see if it works for Pierredornellas.

  6. Hi Jenia,

the problem with corrupted characters still exists on my blogs. I've recreated the backup and downloaded it again and the characters in the xml-file are still "?".

Is there anything we can do to get the Backup Tool working without editing all Posts?

  7. @marycooch: thank you for the kind words, welcome to WordPress.com! Sorry about the timing, but glad to hear you are all set.

@fabspim: I emailed you directly so that we can take a look at your file. If anyone else has issues with character corruption, please post into this thread and I will reach out.

  8. Hi Jenia,

same problem here. I request a new Backup file 10 minutes ago and I still get ??? instead of german mutations like ü, ä and so on. Looks like posterous hasn't changed the export process.

    Any hints?

  9. I have the same problem. Yesterday I exported my posterous blog and uploaded it to wordpress (http://cyberwanderlust.wordpress.com/2012/10/28/kako-se-kalio-biciklisticki-feminizam/), but it replaced every letter ščćž to ??.
What I have to do to fix this? Please answer.

  10. Also, I haven't got all of my 4000+ posts from posterous, only a little over a half of them...and some recent text-posts are JUST MISSING on WordPress. I'm requesting a new backup and will try again.

  11. If you don't mind, try requesting the export file one more time at the end of the day today or tomorrow morning. I don't think they would have fixed it over the weekend, more than likely they'll have it fixed up today.

If it's still bad by tomorrow morning, please let us know, there may be something we can poke with a sharp stick.

    Sorry for the trouble!

  12. I just request a new backup file. There are still ?? instead of the german mutations.

    Thanks for your efforts!

  13. If the issue is actually visible in the file itself, you'll need to contact Posterous about it.

If the file only has ??, that's all we'll import, because that's all we see. The file needs to have the properly encoded characters in it.

  14. Seems like posterous fixed it. The new backup file includes correct mutations. Thanks to everybody involved helping fix the issue.

  15. You're welcome!
