Importing my blog from Posterous didn't work in 24 hours

  1. Importing my blog from Posterous didn't work in 24 hours

The blog I need help with is pipik1199.wordpress.com.

  2. Same here. It said if I don't hear within 24 hours to contact support, but instead it put me into the community forums.

s4xton.wordpress.com , importing from s4xton.com. Started import about 48 hours ago and no progress.

    Thanks,
    -Aaron

  3. So, the import did succeed after maybe 25 hours :-). Go figure.

  4. pipik1199 - glad to hear the import finished.

s4xton - I've stopped the import on your site since it was not running. Please try again and let me know how it goes.

  5. Ms. Happiness Engineer kathrynwp-

I restarted the import. It appears to be working fine. Says it's still in progress, but I think most of the posts have imported. Maybe there's a couple last things it's pulling yet. Thanks for your help.

    -Aaron

  6. s4xton - great. If you are missing any content after the import has completed, just let me know.

  7. kathrynwp- only two issues:

    1. I can't seem to find the original images on the larger ones, I can only seem to find the ones reduced down to 1000px wide. Where can I find the originals?

    2. I have a link on most of the posts that says "See the full gallery on Posterous." The goal here is to be able to shut down my Posterous site completely, so I don't want those links (and want the original images available). I have over 1,500 posts, so I'm not going to manually edit them all.

    Thanks for your help.

    -Aaron

  8. Hi there - we'd be glad to look into this for you.

Could you please provide a couple of links to example posts for both of these issues so our developers can have a look? Thanks.

  9. Thanks for these - I'll pass them along to our developers and see what we can do.

  10. Kathrynwp-

I am still interested in moving from Posterous to WordPress, but am curious if the two issues can be resolved:

    1) WordPress getting the original images.

    2) Fixing where it doesn't have "See Full Gallery on Posterous" on every photo post.

The goal is to migrate fully out of Posterous and shut it down, so I do not want links back to the Posterous nor the original files there.

    Thanks for your help!

  11. Hi there - One of our engineers has been working on sorting out the issues with your images. Issue (2) should definitely be possible, and we are still working on diagnosing and fixing issue (1). I'll keep you posted here. Thanks for your patience.

  12. I just wanted to let you know that our engineer is still working on your case. Since unfortunately it isn't a simple fix, it's taking a bit longer than we'd like. I'll continue to keep you updated here.

  13. Kathryn-

This is a great follow-up. Thank you for paying attention to this one. Not only does it help me directly, I think it will help a large number of your potential users migrating from Posterous.

    -Aaron

  14. Now especially with Posterous' announcement, this issue for me has escalated… and I believe it impacts a lot of other people who may have been heavy Posterous users wishing to migrate to WordPress.

How does this look on your end?

    -Aaron

  15. Have you noticed the yellow banner at the head of the forum?
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-posterous/

  16. Timethief-

I did not see that. Look! All updated. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

    -Aaron

  17. Hi Aaron,

Sorry for our delay in getting back to you. Since your original request, we’ve released a new importer that uses an export file Posterous generates, and we’ve asked Posterous to specify the original images (rather than scaled images) in the export file.

Could you please try the import again using the new instructions? Once completed, please use search to see if the scaled image paths are still used.

Please let me know how it goes and if you need further assistance!

  18. Giving it a shot now; now that I got my test blog cleared out! Thanks.

  19. Well it looks like one issue is resolved, one isn't resolved, and two new issues showed up:

    Example: http://s4xton.wordpress.com/

The link to "See full gallery at Posterous" thing is resolved. Thanks.

    1. The new importer still doesn't seem to pull in the highest resolution images.

    2. The in-line images seem to be of lower quality than before.

    3. Any characters that are Hawaiian, Japanese, or even some apostrophes, now are "???". This last issue appears to be caused by Posterous, not WordPress. But I presume this is impacting everyone WordPress is trying to pull from Posterous. I put in a support request with them, but as you know, they have no resources. Maybe you have a better solution or someone you can ping there?

Thanks for helping me out with this. It's incredibly frustrating but I'm glad you folks are on my side.

P.S. I think I'll need my site wiped again before I try another import. Feel free to do so at any time.

  20. Hi Aaron,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

    1. The new importer still doesn't seem to pull in the highest resolution images.

Unfortunately, this is still in the Posterous court, since the import file refers to the scaled images. We've also reached out to them, but I don't have any updates on this.

    2. The in-line images seem to be of lower quality than before.

Could you please give me links to specific example posts so that I can take a look? Something to keep in mind is that in posts, images are adjusted to fit the width of the theme. Once you click through to the image attachment page, you'll see the file sized as uploaded.

We are aware of the corruption issue with some character sets (the characters seem to "break" at the point of a backup file generation) and reached out to Posterous. I will let you know as soon as we have any updates about this, thanks for your patience!

  21. Thanks for the answers on 1 and 3.

    For 2, I did some testing, and let's table it. I can't prove what I'm saying. :)

For 1 and 3, this is an idea:

    https://twitter.com/bureado/status/304421238057607168

In other words, create your own XML file based off all the individual post XML files. Something to explore? Maybe this would be useful for your import tools? What do you think? Should I try it?

    -Aaron

  22. Hi Aaron, I have no idea if this is going to work :D You can always try and see what happens, and then empty the site again.

  23. Posterous has let us know that the issue with accented and other non-English characters should now be fixed. You'll need to re-download your Posterous export file and try the import again.

Just let us know if you'd like us to empty out your WordPress.com site before you do. This will delete all pages, posts, comments, images and other uploaded files, as well as categories and tags. It's not reversible.

Otherwise, you can empty your site manually.

Please let us know if you need any help.

  24. Hi there - I wanted to check in to see if you still needed any help with this. After their initial fix for accented characters didn't work consistently, Posterous made another tweak to their exporter over the weekend. You would need to generate a new export from your Posterous site. We suggest you have a look at the file first to make sure the accented characters look OK. Just let me know if you have any trouble with the import into WordPress.com. Thanks!

  25. I'm trying with the new file and I'm getting this error when trying to import where I need to assign my posts to an existing user. This would normally be no problem but it's asking me to do that for almost a thousand posts and the post previews look pretty screwed up. Not sure what I should do here...

  26. Example:

    Assign Authors

To make it easier for you to edit and save the imported content, you may want to reassign the author of the imported item to an existing user of this site. For example, you may want to import all the entries as admins entries.

    Import author:

hiptop

Uncategorized

Uncategorized

http://s4xton.com/jason-collett-at-the-7th-st-entry-43606</guid>

<wp:post_date>Wed Mar 22 06:40:00 -0800 2006</wp:post_date> <wp:post_date_gmt>Wed Mar 22 06:40:00 -0800 2006</wp:post_date_gmt> <wp:comment_status>open</wp:comment_status> <wp:ping_status>open</wp:ping_status> <wp:post_id>67513088</wp:post_id> <wp:post_name>jason-collett-at-the-7th-st-entry-43606</wp:post_name> <wp:status>publish</wp:status> <wp:post_parent>0</wp:post_parent> <wp:menu_order>0</wp:menu_order> <wp:post_type>post</wp:post_type> <wp:post_password></wp:post_password> <wp:is_sticky>0</wp:is_sticky>

Weekend in Des Moines

http://s4xton.com/weekend-in-des-moines</link>

  27. You're seeing the error with all that HTML dump on the page in the Dashboard?

Just to be sure, did you upload a fresh .xml export file from Posterous, and did you empty your site before-hand (including empty the Trash sub-section)?
