Importing not working - migrating to self hosting from WordPress.com

  1. Hi there, I am a designer helping a client who has a personal blog on WordPress.com. We have designed a new custom theme and set up some new hosting for them. We have done the export and import process as per WordPress instructiuons. When we import into the new site, it only pulls in a few posts - most of the content is lost, and we have no idea why. Having searched the forums, this issue seems to crop up a lot, but I cannot find a solution to it. This is a major panic for us as we have to get this site working by next week, and I don't fancy recreating all the posts manually!

Is there no other way to get all the existing content from a WordPress hosted blog and into a new self-hosted site? Anyone know why the import fails? I opened up the XML in Dreamweaver and can actually see the missing posts, but they don't appear in the admin of the new site. It's driving me insanse! All help gratefully recieved. Thanks.
