Importing WordPress.com to WordPress.org

  • I’m having trouble figuring out if my original wordpress.com site has migrated to my BlueHost WordPress.org site. I can log in using the /wp-admin, but I can also still log in through the regular “Get started” wordpress.com homepage. Once logged into my /wp-admin dashboard everything looks the same (which is great) however I can still get to my stats and when actually clicking on the stats button it goes back to my regular wordpress area, not the admin area.

I just read the section about needing to transfer the domain to BlueHost, which I have no idea if I have done. I didn’t unlock and get the codes from my Dashboard Store so I fear I have ultimately just screwed the whole thing up. Please help!

  • This guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

Your domain still points to WordPress.com. You can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

The guide below explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar, including how to access the authorization (EPP) code:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

I hope this helps – let me know if you have any more questions!

  • Thank you so much!

I am waiting for the transfer of my domain registrar to take place.. But I do have a question once that happens.

So I now can only log into my wp-admin login – which is fine, however my incorrect export/import of my content into my sproutinganoldsoul.wordpress.com instead of my .org site has left me a bit confused. In order to log in it automatically takes me to sproutinganoldsoul.wordpress.com/wp-admin
Once my domain registrar transfer is complete, will it be possible for me to follow the same steps, and import my content into the .org? Or have I screwed it up royally?

  • Once the domain is transferred your WordPress.com blog will revert to the sproutinganoldsoul.wordpress.com address. After that you can safely export your content and import it into your newly hosted sproutinganoldsoul.com site.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

  • Will WordPress notify me when the transfer is complete? I’m sorry! My sign in looks the same, so I just wanted to double check…. I had until April 1st to decline the registrar transfer so I’m just not really sure.

  • The domain will automatically redirect to the new host when the transfer is done. After that I can remove the domain upgrade from your WordPress.com account.

However, I see that you’ve renewed your domain until 2015-01-11. If you want you can also just keep the domain with us and point it to your new hosting provider, it’s fairly easy: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

    Looking forward to your reply.
