   Hello everyone.
   I'm trying to move my self-hosted wordpress 2.7.1 blog into a wordpress.com one. So far, I exported the xml file from wp 2.7.1 and imported it into wordpress.com blog. I have the categories and the tags perfects. But all the posts and comments are missing.
   how can I import the posts (and if possible comments) ?
   is there a way to export posts and comments to import them ?
   (I can't uprgrade my version 2.7.1 as it completely crashes everything, and I don't want to loose everything)

   Presuming that the choices for export on wordpress.org are the same as here (there is a separate forum for self-hosted blogs and it might be to your advantage to ask there, if you still can't get it to work after this), then did you make sure you chose the 'All Content' option?

   I've exported from a wordpress.com blog to another wordpress.com blog and had no problems, but I know that some people do have problems if they have a lot of content in their blog from which they're exporting. If so, you might have to do it in small quantities at a time.

   and here is the info on wordpress.com for importing to wordpress.com:

   http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

   If none of that helps, come back here to this thread and we'll try to help further. Bear in mind that most people who respond to questions here are volunteers, but if things don't work out we can flag it for staff to look at (usually only on a weekday).

   @absurdoldbird : thank you ! The 2.7.1 only has the "author" option to export, I can only click on "all authors". I think the multiple choice import comes with version 3.0. Really appreciated you spent time in your detailed answer, I hope it will help other people !

   Is there any chance that you could upgrade to at least 3.0? What sort of trouble do you run into when updating?

   I don't really feel like trying to upgrade again, I don't remember all the details but last time was complete chaos, missing sql requests and things like that. But thank you for replying !

   I found this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/advanced-export-for-wp-wpmu/ that is made to export small bits of the blog at the time, just like the new versions of WP.
   It's working very well so far, saving a lot of trouble.
   (When using that plugin on the blog to export, you need to turn off all the other plugins)
