I'n new to WordPress....I need a little help with content.

  1. This isn't really a technical issue...Its more to do with content and style. Basically I've looked at some of your blog sites and I'm impressed with the quality...not so much the writing, I'm more impressed with the format and style. Does this make sense to anyone? For example my website. booksbysteve.com. I made it with yahoo sitebuilder which is a lame ass way to build a website but its user friendly and easy. Pretty much the only way I know how to build a website.. The content is fine but the style and format is lame if you ask me.

I'm 45 and maybe I just don't get it yet. Someone please take a look. This isn't a shameless plug and I can understand why someone would think it is. I really think I need help. My website looks like something from the 80's.

I also have a few other problems....I get zero traffic. My books sell fine on Amazon etc, but I've had 135 hits on my site in the past month, and most of those were me. I don't get the whole RSS feed thing. My books get great reviews but I sold a total of 1300 last year. That kind of pathetic. To be clear...I need help. I don't have tons of money to hire a publiscist or pay a professinal website builder. I do think with the release of my new book Jan 26th and the videos I'm doing will help.

Example...I just made a video 5 days ago and put it on youtube, myspace, facebook etc. It's on my blog or website if you want to take a look. But the video got 1500 hits in 4 days. So I think that's a great and "outside the box" advertising for me. I plan on making several more videos over the summer. It's relatively cheap and a pretty effective advertising tool.

The point I'm trying to make is I need low cost and effective advertising and style tips. The problems I have are very little money and even less technical knowledge. Within the past two weeks I did research and do these things: Amazon SITB (search inside the book), make the video, and am working on KINDLE. I have also been told to blog more which is something I've never done. This is my first blog site...lol. I plan on placing blogs all over the place.

Someone please take a look at my site and the blog I have here at WordPress and give me real ideas that a dummy like me can undertsand.

    Thank you so much.

    Steve Z

The blog I need help with is stevezellers.wordpress.com.

  2. We need a link to your WP.com blog, starting with http, in order to make appropriate suggestions.

Steve, there are some starting tips here:

My advice is: write interesting stuff that people want to read. Use appropriate tags. Read other blogs and link to the ones you like. See what tags those blogs use, and use them too (when appropriate). Do that every day and don't stop. It takes time and effort to build a regular readership.

  4. Check out the tips here too: http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/post-index/

Hi, Steve. That's a bit worrisome. Do you mean you plan on having a blog here, one at blogger, another that's self-hosted? If so, why? If that's not what you meant, what did you mean?

Since you've only got one post on your blog and it's hyping a book that's on your website, maybe you could solve some of your content conundrum by taking time to think about how the blog should differ from your website, what its purpose is and who your target audience is. ("Everyone" is not an answer to the last point.)

As for the "design" of your website, it's very 1998. It looks like those pre-fab sites Microsoft Front Page used to generate back then. The problem with 2009 eyes viewing it is that it does not look retro or fun, it just looks cheezy and cheap. And I'm sure that's not what you're after.

LOL....Yes It does look cheezy and cheap and that isn't what I want. I have no clue how I got to this place with that website. I think I'm going to start by paying someone to build me a a better website.

Anyways thank you for the replies...Over the past few months I've taken internet marketing much more seriously and I'm learning as I go. I have already seen a dramatic jump in sales so I guess I'm on the right track. My whole reason for this post was probably my frustraition at my lack of technical prowess. I'm trying....thank you
