Installing Plug ins - Please be basic with me

  1. Hi.

Ok I am looking to be able to install my own plug ins on my blog. I do not own a domain yet I simply have the free version.

I have searched about how to add plug ins and it really confuses me.
I dont know about hosting etc .

Please if you reply dont put something like "YOU CANT INSTALL PLUGINS ON WORDPRESS" as thats not helpful at all!!

Please can you answer the below questions to help me understand:

If i purchase my own domain and map it to wordpress can I then install plug ins?

If the answer to the above is no please can you explain why and roughly how much it would be to be able to install the plug ins.

Sorry if the above comes across as harsh, but ive read similiar posts where replies are very vague and dont answer the persons question at all / or they go off on talking about .org and .com which confused the hell out of me.

    Cheers

The blog I need help with is whatsjoeuptonext.wordpress.com.

    no

WordPress.com is a shared platform - many blogs are served from a single server. If people could install arbitrary plug-ins this would compromise security. However there are a large number of widgets and shortcodes available.

If you want plugins you need to host your own instance of WordPress.org software. You will be able to find out more about this, including costs, on the wordpress.org forums.

  3. Hello

    Thanks for the reply.

When you say "If you want plugins you need to host your own instance of WordPress.org software. " what does this mean?

Ive looked at your link and it features the wordpress.org forum. Ive typed in "how to purchase wordpress.org" and I cannot locate prices anywhere as it just brings up posts.

To help me understand can I ask one more question:

If I pay another company such as 123 reg or godaddy to host my wordpress site can I then add plug ins? Are there many complications involved when transferring over to another hoster?

  4. When you say "If you want plugins you need to host your own instance of WordPress.org software. " what does this mean?

What it means is that you need someone else to host the WordPress software for you. With WordPResss.com the staff manage upgrades, security patches, etc. for you. With .org you either need a managed hosting plan or to do it yourself. For cost and simplicity, unless you need a specific plugin that is not available, or want to host a site that is not allowed under the terms and conditions, WordPress.com is best.

That's because there are many different hosting options - some with limits on traffic, some with more powerful servers, and some with managed services. Think of it this way - WordPress.com is like an "all as you can eat buffet". As long as you follow the rules and don't want anything that isn't on the menu they will supply as much food (hosting capacity) as you need. WordPress.org is like hiring a chef. You need to supply the kitchen and the raw materials, but he will do exactly what you want and charge accordingly.

Yes, you can install plugins, basically they are hosting a WordPRess.org instance for you. Changing hosts can be complicated, you would have to back up your existing instance, configure the same plugins, themes and options, restore onto the new instance, then point your domain at the new instance.

  5. Hey.

You are a great help so far so I appreciate your responses.

I'm thinking now it sounds like quite abit of hassle to transfer although Bluehost are offering a one click transfer of host for wordpress users which sounds quite good.

Basically I want to create a page that does not appear on the top toolbar, nor is a parent of a page. . so basically a page that's hidden that is only accessible when you click on a link.
Is there anything you can think of that wordpress.com can supply me that enables me to this - then I may not need plug ins :)

  6. Here is a summary of the differences between wp.COM and wp.ORG:

You can easily export/import your site using tools:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
If you have followers, then install Jetpack so they can be transferred too:

For a fee, there is a guided transfer:

Wp.org software is free, but you pay for the hosting and you are responsible for any and everything that can go wrong with your site. Depending on which host you choose, costs vary greatly.

If I understand what you want to do, just use a custom menu, creat pages and don't add them all to the menu.

  8. Ok now this maybe the answer.

Ive googled it and seems like it is however I dont understand it.

Ive created a menu in the hope to add pages in it that I dont want displayed on my toolbar, however doesnt seem to work.

The link youve supplied goes onto how to create menus, however doesnt state how to hide pages from displaying on the toolbar. You said dont add them all to the menu, but when ive checked none of my pages have been added to a menu and there all showing up on the toolbar so im confused,....

  9. Ive created a page called TEST.. that you will see on my blog that appears on the top toolbar. I want to hide it.. could you briefly explain how I would do this via menus? :)

  10. I haven't got time to run through in detail, but basically you follow the custom menu instructions, and create a custom menu and add all the pages except TEST

  11. Ok created custom menu.

Only issue is now that ive added all pages except TEST and none of the parent commands work. It literally displays all my pages on the top now where as before for example you would hover over TRAVELLING and then ASIA, EUROPE USA would appear.. it doesnt do that with the new menu in place.

Is there anything I can do to organise parenting via menus?

  12. People. IVE DONE IT!1 Hurrar.

Managed to figure out how to make the pages parents again.

Thanks so much you both have been a great help!!

  13. Great, I'm glad you've managed it
