iPhone app not working before and after 2 step authentication

  1. The app on my iPhone 4S started acting up before I was prompted to do the 2step authentication. Specifically, it wouldn't let me approve ping backs/trackbacks. Then I was prompted to do the 2 step authentication. I did it because I thought we had to, and I thought it would fix my issue. It's made it worse, though. Now, not only can I still not approve pingbacks but when I go into it, it no longer shows me any updated notifications at all. They show up on the home screen of my phone when they first come in, but in the app itself, I haven't seen any new notifications for about a day.

Also, when I open the app to look at the notifications, the little red bubble telling me how many new ones I had disappears, but when I get fresh notifications, it starts counting from where it last left off.

The site itself on my MacBook Air works perfectly but I use my phone more than I do my laptop.

I see someone else has removed the authentication and the WP app, and reinstalled the latter. I'd rather not do the 2 step authentication; can I remove it?

The blog I need help with is silverleafjournal.wordpress.com.

  2. Please visit this link https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword and click the "Need More Help?" link next to the button, and fill out the form on that page. Our account recovery team will get back to you by email.

  3. But I haven't lost my password. In the meantime, I have disabled the 2 step authentication, which means I can now use the app again but the original problem remains: I can't approve or comment on any notifications in the app. There is no approve button to click on and if I try to click on the person's image to look at their site, nothing happens.

  4. I'll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  5. The best place for WordPress iOS app support is here:

    http://ios.forums.wordpress.org/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

  6. This doesn't really solve my problem; I've noticed that I also can no longer approve ping backs and comments from the little icon in the top right of my screen when I have the full site open on my macbook air. I have to go into comments under the drop down menu on the left now. That is the only way I have of approving anything.
Is this a change that WordPress has made, or have my settings changed somehow? If it's the latter, can you please direct me to where I can change them back?
    Thanks.

  7. This doesn't really solve my problem;

I'm sorry that I don't have an easy solution. But in reality, iOS app related issues are best served in the forum I linked to. The app developers are active there and that is the fastest path to a solution if there is some sort of a bug.

I've noticed that I also can no longer approve ping backs and comments from the little icon in the top right of my screen when I have the full site open on my macbook air.

What exactly are you seeing when you click that icon? Can you show me a screenshot? Here are some screenshot instructions if you are not familiar with the process:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

I find http://snag.gy/ to be very useful for sharing screenshots. You can also upload the screenshot to your site's media library. I will be able to see it there.

  8. I'm having similar problems. Works fine on desktop but not at all on ios or android apps. It says I need an application specific password but I don't have one and have never been asked for one. Huh?

  9. Hm, mine doesn't ask for a password (now that I've disabled that 2 step authentication). Maybe that's why you're having issues? Mine just doesn't work.
And rootjosh, here's the long-overdue screenshot:

    http://silverleafjournal.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/img_0548.png

    Hope this works.

  10. @5ilverleaf

And rootjosh, here's the long-overdue screenshot:

    http://silverleafjournal.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/img_0548.png

That is a screenshot from an ipad. Your original comment above referenced a Macbook Air. Can you please clarify?

  11. @gnozu

Yes, if you have two-step setup, you need an application specific password to use the mobile app. You can set one of those up by logging into your WordPress.com site on a computer and going to:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/security/

  12. Sorry for the confusion. There were no recent ping backs visible on my Macbook so nothing showed up for the screen shot. I should have explained that I did the screen shot of the iPad because what it shows is the same thing that the Macbook shows (when there are recent ping backs). And the same thing that my iPhone shows. None of them allow me to approve on them. The only way I can approve a ping back is to go into the archived notifications on my laptop.

  13. And here is a screen shot from the laptop now that there is something relevant there:

    http://silverleafjournal.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/screen-shot-2014-01-02-at-11-01-32-am.png

So you see, it's pretty much the same. I can't approve the ping back from this screen, I have to go into the archives to do it. And I can't approve it from my iPad or iPhone; I get the same screen on all 3, with no "approve" option to click on.

  14. @5ilverleaf

So, we're working on that bug. Thank you for your assistance in reporting it. In the meantime, you might give this notification view a try:

    http://wordpress.com/notifications/

Again, thanks for the help. It is appreciated.

  15. @5ilverleaf

Can you test this again and report back if it is working now?

  16. Hi, thanks. It always did work from the link that you just provided above, and it still does. Happily, I can report that doing it the other way on the MacBook Air now works again, too - thank you!!
Unfortunately, it still doesn't work on the app, either with the iPhone or the iPad. Is that being fixed as well?
    Thanks again for your help!

  17. Short answer, sadly, fixing one (the web interface) doesn't fix the other (mobile app). Longer answer, I've reported it to the mobile guys and I would expect it to be fixed in a not too distant version release.

    Does that make sense?

  18. Hello again,

If you wanted to give us a big hand, some log files would be a HUGE help. We've got instructions on how to get those to us here:

    http://dev.ios.wordpress.org/extra-debug/

Let me know if you have any trouble or those instructions don't make sense.

  19. yes that makes sense and here you go:

  21. Hi!

Just wanted to check back in and see if there had been any change in this issue with the release of the 3.9 version of the app?

  22. Hi,
Thanks for checking back. Yes, everything is working perfectly again.

  23. Great to hear! Thanks for your help.
