Is it possible to make a secure download link?

  1. Hi,

I would like to know if anyone has any good ideas about the best (and easiest) thing for me to do. I would like to thank certain people for helping me with a project by giving them a free download of some art work that I have done. I don't want to send them the original file, but I would like for them to be able to download the file once. I want to put the download link on my blog, but I don't want every member of the public to be able to download the file, just the certain people. I was thinking that my ideal would be to have a download link that was password protected, perhaps with a password that expires or something like that. But as you can see I have no idea how to do this or if it's even possible! I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what might be a good idea.

    Thank you for your time.

You could put the link into a password protected post or page, but there is only one password and no way to monitor and limit downloads. The main problem with this is that if someone posts the password on twitter or facebook, literally thousands of people could hit your site and download the image in a very short period.

I might suggest setting up a custom contact form specifically for this purpose and then you can email the image to them as a thank you.

With the new updated contact form here, you can add custom fields, put it on pages or posts, and you can even put it into a text widget in the sidebar. It has a lot of flexibility.

  3. If you have the download files in password-protected posts then you could require readers to contact you via a contact form to get the password.

  4. Wow that was swift! I didn't know you could password protect posts. I think I'll have a go with that.

Thank you very much for your time!
