thanks timethief. I'm not sure that I need a static IP address specifically. Here is what cloudflare people have told me:
I have checked our logs and found these errors occurring from the backend of your site:
02/16 13:34:47 connect() failed (110: Connection timed out) while connecting to upstream softwaretrading.co.uk
02/16 13:31:53 connect() failed (110: Connection timed out) while connecting to upstream softwaretrading.co.uk
02/16 13:24:23 connect() failed (110: Connection timed out) while connecting to upstream softwaretrading.co.uk
02/16 13:19:41 connect() failed (110: Connection timed out) while connecting to upstream softwaretrading.co.uk
These timeouts occur when our IP addresses are being blocked or throttled. Under these conditions, visitors to the site would experience intermittent site offline messages and\or connection refusals.
1. Make sure that you're not blocking CloudFlare IPs in .htaccess, iptables , or your firewall.
2. Make sure your hosting provider isn't rate limiting or blocking IP requests from the CloudFlare IPs and ask them to whitelist the IP addresses below.
3. Make sure that you're operating off of the most recent versions of Bad Behavior or mod_security. mod_security's core rules aren't blocking CloudFlare requests.
Has there been any upgrade/downgrade or change that may have caused this? Could it be some kind of infinite loop behavior between cloudflare and wordpress.com?
