It's Possible!: Facebook SHARE and LIKE buttons...at the same time!

  1. Thanks to everyone for their contributions with this. Airodyssey mentioned the tip I was about to leave regarding making sure to select "Official Buttons" under Button Style, as there is no longer a drop down menu as mentioned early on in this thread. That will enable the "Like" button for facebook, and then you can create the share button as originally stated. See how mine came out: thisboysbriefs.wordpress.com

  2. I am wondering, however, if there is a way to get rid of that big obnoxious space that shows up after the "Like" button? It really throws off the look of the share section. thisboysbriefs.wordpress.com

  3. @tklogan: To my knowledge, no. The space is 100% blank only when no one "Liked" your post yet and, in some languages, the button is much longer and the gap is shorter (example: German is "Gefällt mir": 11 characters vs. "Like": 4 characters).

  4. Also note that the space following your posts you are indicating is where the advertising is placed, so that could be a factor. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). As the ads do not display to us when we are logged in many bloggers do not realize they are there at all. Also as many use browsers with ad blockers they don't witness the ads. Note: The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

  5. Hi, I have carried out the steps provided by Jcryle above but am still not able to put in the FB Like button. Instead the button added is a FB Share button which is similar to the existing one provided by WP. I did notice that for the second last step he advised ie." to right click the down button of the existing FB button provided by WP and choose the Like option", when I did that, nothing happens. Appreciate it if anymore can help please!

    My blog is at http://aulova.wordpress.com

  6. many thanks! airodyssey. By combining your answer and also another member's (brancolina's on 22 Aug 2011 - to change the Button Style to "Official"), I have managed to get the FB Like button up. The only problem is between this button and the FB Share button is one big gap and I do not know how to make them closer.

But, still the same, many thanks! Anyone with advice on the last point is appreciated.!

  7. Hi there! This is all really great, but when I select "Official Buttons", only LinkedIn displays on the live blog. It looks fine in the "Live Preview" on the Settings page though. When I select "Icon + Text" or just "Icon", the Facebook and Twitter buttons display perfectly, but the LinkedIn icon does not display at all... a little frustrating... Any advice, please?

  8. PS The blog I'm referring to is seafoodbar.wordpress.com

  9. @seafoodbar: Timethief already answered that question here.

Like her, I have no problem seeing all of your sharing buttons. I suggest you respond to that other thread :-)

  10. @seafoodbar
    Hello again,
I told you yesterday in another thread you commented in that I'm using Firefox 7.0.1 and I can see all the sharing buttons on your blog. I can see them today too. Please try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Please also see this in the support docs as it may be helpful:

If you are having trouble showing the sharing buttons on your blog, please check the following:
I can’t see the buttons on the front page.
Make sure to select “Posts and index pages” for “Show sharing buttons on” setting. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#troubleshooting

  11. I'm new here and I must be the only one who can't get this 'share' and 'like' button thing to work. I'm not a techie. Can someone please help me?

    Taffythree

  12. @taffythree: Did you read the instructions, as well as the update I posted earlier on? Which part are you having trouble with exactly?

  13. @jcryle Thank you for your great help, I tried this one in my site with the name like, How ever the like button is not showing up the number of likes, Please do help me. Thanks !!

  14. @msbuzz: Did you read my reply immediately above yours?

  15. @airodyssey Thank you for your info, however how/where/which step can I make the button to official buttons. Please help me . In my site, it still not showing up as a like button :(

  16. @airodyssey I did change to Official buttons as you mentioned, However I did not get the no of likes using that.. Please do help me. In this post I do have likes, though the twitter sharing showing correctly !!

  17. Got It .. Thank u for all you guys inputs ...

  18. Hi!
I'm in trouble and need some help. On my version of WordPress (that i manage online), there is no "arrow" on the "Share" button to chose which mode i want (like, share etc...). Why? (I am working on the French version of wordpress but i don't think it does matter).

  19. Thank you so much for these instructions and to @airodyssey for the updated links! I love having the like button in addition to the FB share. :)

Now if only I could get the centered alignment thing figured out for the buttons. Do you mind clarifying where I put the html code? Which widget?

    Thanks in advance!

  20. @katiehigg: I believe aligning the buttons to the center (if at all possible) could only be done with the Custom Design upgrade. If you have it, please open a new topic.

  21. Bummer. Thanks @airodyssey. That would be why I couldn't figure it out I guess. :)

  22. But how do you manually put in a like button, rather than a share button? what's the link for that?

  23. thanks for your help

  24. hi, unfortunately all the URL's to the facebook icons don't work. Where can I find a link that does work?

    Thanks for sharing

    Peter -

  25. @deruijterp: And you are following the updated instructions, correct?
    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/its-possible-facebook-share-and-like-buttonsat-the-same-time/page/4?replies=125#post-669229
If you are talking about the icon itself: find it on Google (it's the easiest way).

  26. @airodyssey: thanks. In the meantime i progressed a bit further. Obviously I can find an icon, which I uploaded into the media library of the blog. That all works now. Next issue is:

    - the official button is now a LIKE button

so the new service I am creating is a SHARE button. The functionality seems to work with the one I'm creating, however the size of the button is a bit weird. It doesn't resize properly and the descriptive text is placed ON TOP of the image. Can I solve this somehow?

  27. @deruijterp: It's designed to accept only icons that measure 16 x 16 pixels exactly. Anything larger than that will cause unexpected results.

If you have further questions, for the sake of organization, could you please start a new topic (specifying the address of your blog)?
