It's Possible!: Facebook SHARE and LIKE buttons...at the same time!

  1. Up till now (9/4/2010), you had to CHOOSE between having either the Facebook SHARE button OR the Facebook LIKE button for your blog posts.

Well, I just figured out how to have BOTH available.

Here is my site to get a visual of what it looks like ► ► ► http://jcrylequotes.com/

► Follow these short, easy directions to set it up on your blog:

    1) Your Dashboard

    2) Settings

    3) Sharing

    4) Under "Available Services" click "Add a new service"

    5) For "Service Name", type in Facebook

    6) For "Sharing URL", copy this link ► http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=%post_url%

    7) For "Icon URL", copy this link ► http://cdn.iconfinder.net/data/icons/Classy_Social_Media_Icons/16/facebook.png

    8) Click the "Create Share" button

    9) Drag and drop your Facebook SHARE button to either the "Enabled Services" section below the "Available Services" OR over to the right with the WordPress SHARE button.

    10) Now, simply click the right down arrow on the Facebook button (not the button you JUST created; the other one provided by WordPress) and choose the "LIKE" option, save everything at the bottom of the page and you're all set.

You now have both the SHARE and LIKE options available to you at the bottom of your posts.

The blog I need help with is jcrylequotes.com.

  2. Whoa! You rock :)

I named mine as "Share" instead of Facebook (the FB icon already indicates the service so no need to repeat or confuse the reader. The cool thing about this set of share features is how you can list as many social sharing tools as possible to accommodate your readers even when you don't use use them yourself.

  3. WOW!!! thank you soooo much!!! this is really helpful!!!

  4. You're welcome guys. My pleasure. The more folks that get a chance to come visit your site, the better. :-)

  5. This is fantastic ... thank you very much ...

  6. Brilliant!

If I might suggest a slight modification: I advise copying he actual image and uploading it to WordPress itself, so that no matter what happens to that external site, it's always visible. I've had too many hotlinked images go poof.

  7. @raincoaster excellent idea, thanks ...

Have just added delicious now as well.

  8. Hello Thekowalkerjourney (and everyone :)
Thanks a lot... I brought your topic staight onto the fr forum
Thanks again for sharing this trick. Have a nice day!

  9. @raincoaster:

Good idea in actually uploading the actual image into WordPress. You never know if that site where your current image is located might one day decide to go under.

Just an FYI for fellow WordPress bloggers: for anyone looking for top notch social media icons for your blog, look no further than ICONFINDER ► http://www.iconfinder.com/

That is because you have put them in the box on the right, that says they'll be visible after a click through a Share button. Move them to the left, out of that box.

There is no Following button for WordPress.com.

  22. Thanks a lot!

  23. hmmm. enlightening, thank you very much.

    1. you can get the like 5-star functionality from wp already but yes obviously what you have done is better using FB-like - which is more industry standard.
    2. Very annoying as I will now have to re-jig my site to do what you have !!!
    3. You seem to have those buttons appearing on your pages when the user goes to the root/home of your blog. all my buttons only appear when an individual post is clicked (which i don't want). any ideas what special thing you have done???maybe a feature of my theme??? http://blog.kothea.com/ or http://kothea.wordpress.com/

  24. Kothea,

    To answer question #3 above...

When you are in the Sharing Settings, look at the bottom of the page and you'll see:

► "Show sharing buttons on..." ◄

    1) "posts and index pages"
    2) "posts only"
    3) "index pages only"

I have my settings on #1.

This ought to do it for ya. ;)

Wow - amazing! Thanks so much for this :)

  26. This was incredibly helpful, thank you! Both the info about share/like and the icon finder were great to know. Could I trouble you to tell me how your badges are all in a row on your sidebar? I am new to all of this and so far all I can do is stack the badges on top of each other by creating two separate image widgets. http://madameparadox.com Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  27. Thank you so much for this, added! I dislike asking more questions as I know you must be incredibly busy, but if you have a moment, is there a way to change the font, or is it the font of the share words based on theme? Thank you!

  28. hsd9965,

Regarding how I center the social media icons on my site [http://jcrylequotes.com/], simply add these HTML codes below to your current HTML code within your widget:

Put this on the BEGINNING of your code ► <p align="center"> and then this at the END of your code ► </p>

By the way, if you want some cool shortcuts on HTML in order to spice up your sidebar, keep this handy dandy HTML cheatsheet bookmarked ► http://www.webmonkey.com/2010/02/html_cheatsheet/

    Hope this helps you.

  29. Great, great, great! Thnks a lot!!!!

  30. Has this information been superceded by the instructions found here?
