Joomla to WordPress

  1. I have a website on a basic hosted server with cPanel. Right now it is running Joomla and I would like to ultimately switch it to the WordPress capability that is offered. I understand I can just go in under cPanel to "Install" WordPress. But like I said my domain currently uses Joomla and I don't want to overwrite what I have, I would like to be able to build the WordPress first and then one day change the domain to using WordPress.

    How do I do that?

  2. If you will be installing and running wordpress on your own web hosting account, then you need to be over at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that is where the self-hosted version of the software is supported. There are a couple of ways to get Joomla content into a wordpress site. There is a migrator plugin and also some information in the codex (documentation) and in the forums over at the wordpress.ORG site. Search the forums for something like "joomla migration" without the quote marks.

  3. Thank you, I already know about the migrator. But I am trying to figure out how to test and play with it before taking down my Joomla version. Then one day switch it.

I will ask over there, thanks for the lead.

  4. What you can do is do an installation of wordpress on your web server either in a subdirectory, or you can temporarily create a subdomain and then lock the search engines out of that directory in a robots.txt file. You can then play with it and see what is possible.

The other choice would be to install wordpress on your personal computer using either WAMP (windows) or MAMP (mac) and play with it there.

The wordpress.ORG forums though are where you need to be talking about this as few of the volunteers here have any experience with self-hosted wordpress, and it is different from what is here.
