When I post any posts in my wordpress blog the whole length article appears on the homepage. It makes homepage too lengthy; Is there anyway I can have my posts appear short in homepage and put there a 'read more' link which links it to full article without having to create a new page for that post.

Yes you can split content by inserting "the more tag" into your posts.

Indeed, you don't need to make by hand your "Continue reading" links code, a tag that does that is provided for you: the more tag.
You can add the more tag on Edit Post by clicking on its icon on visual mode (ALT+SHIFT+T), previously placing the text cursor where you want the link to appear, or by writing the code for the more tag on the html mode.
