Likes not sticking

  1. Sometimes when I like another blogger's post the like does not stay there, it just disappears. What is wrong?

The blog I need help with is ronscubadiver.wordpress.com.

  2. I don't know but that sounds browser related to me.

    1. Make sure you are running one of the browsers and versions here http://browsehappy.com or update to one.

    2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

    (a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:
    http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/safari-ipad-clear-cache.htm
    http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/How-To-Clear-Browsing-Data-In-Chrome-For-Ipad_6.htm

    (b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
    http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    (c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.

    (d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

    4. If you are not successful let us know:
    (a) How you are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
    (c) And what any error reports you receive state.

  3. I am using chrome, latest version, the problem seems to be temporary. It will last for about an hour and go away by itself. I will try some of the above things.

  4. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

  5. I have found with Chrome on a Mac allowing 3rd party cookies, turning off extensions (probably adblock plus), enabling https, clearing the cache and cookies and restarting the browser does work.

You should also realize that denying third party cookies and use of adblock are popular options for browsing privacy and improving the browsing experience. Clearing cookies requires logging back into numerous websites including wordpress.com. Using https requires going from the default reader page to blog admin and back again another annoyance.

So what I see here is a problem on the the server side which can be avoided on the client side, but only with a lot of trouble for the client.

The best I can do for now is to use Safari in it's default condition for wordpress.com and put up with the https login dance and the inconvenience of using a different browser.

Perhaps you could tell me exactly which 3rd party cookies I need to allow and which domains need to be whitelisted on adblock plus. By exactly I mean with the syntax these items understand. I have tried whitelisting worpress.com and wp.com in both to no avail. With Chrome I believe I have the proper code with the [*.] thing.

  6. I'll tag this thread for Staff response re: enabling third party cookies, https:// use, etc. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  7. Remember, the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it happens and the only solution is to wait an hour. I have the problem on both a Windows 8 box and a Macbook pro, both while using Chrome. I have not tried IE on Windows yet, but I cringe at the thought of using it.

  8. the problem seems to be temporary. It will last for about an hour and go away by itself

Do you see your previous 'like' after an hour? or does everything work normal again after an hour?

  9. Any "like" that did not stick will not appear after an hour. The ones that stuck before the problem started will still be there, and everything returns to working normally.

  10. Do you also encounter this issue using the Macbook Pro on a different Internet connection?

  11. The answer to your question is I am not sure.

Today I am using WiFi in a hotel. Usually I am home and use Chrome on a Windows 8 box that is wired directly to the router and a very fast cable connection. The Windows machine behaves the same way with "likes" working for a while and then suddenly they stop sticking. After an hour or so everything is fine. Chrome is set up the same way. The only other extensions are one to keep the backspace key from changing pages and something that goes to yahoo mail when I click on an email address.

Is there some sort of whitelist for 3rd party cookies and adblock plus because it is a lot of trouble to switch browsers or change browser settings several times a day. I can make it work, but not with settings that a lot of people use. I do have [*.]wordpress.com and same for wp.com as whitelisted 3rd party cookies.

When I tried Safari here (clean in default condition) "likes" did not work until I used https.

  12. As of right now 10:08 PDT "likes" will not stick in either Safari or Chrome. 3rd party cookies enabled, extensions disabled and https enabled.

  13. Chrome was upgraded to version 29 today, I am keeping my fingers crossed. Around noon behavior of "likes" was back to normal using my usual browser setup.

  14. Around noon behavior of "likes" was back to normal using my usual browser setup.

Awesome! Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

  15. It just quit working again in Chrome. I switched to Safari, no extensions, 3rd party cookies allowed, https enabled. That did not work later. "Likes don't stick in the reader or even if I go to the individual blog page. It usually happens mid morning at home (CDT) and at the same GMT here (PDT). I bet it resolves in an hour or so. Is this a time of day when your server traffic is very high?

  16. Supposed to read: That did not work either. Likes don't stick....

  17. Did you carefully followed all of timethief's instructions in her previous reply? Could you please make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled: 1: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/ 2: http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

  18. I have followed all the instructions. The problem is intermittent. When it happens it affects both Chrome and Safari. The problem goes away by itself in about an hour. The internet connection at this hotel is awful, and that may be contributing to the problem. I will be home in a few days and try timethief's instructions with a fast connection.
