Hello,
I would like to limit the number of posts appearing on my Home or "front" page so there is not an endless abyss of downward content that takes forwever to load, etc.
I've already gone to SETTINGS, READING SETTINGS, which allowed me to set blog pages at 5 posts. However, I still have endless content appearing on my home page.
What am I missing?

That's called "infinite scrolling" and on the same page > Settings > Reading you will find an option to disable it so you can regain control of how many posts are displayed on the front page of your blog. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/to-infinity?replies=137
P.S. When you disable "infinite scrolling" your footer widgets will also display again.

Infinite Scroll is a new feature. Note that you will only see the option to disable it if you have setup footer widgets on your Appearance → Widgets page.
