Linking outside of WordPress!

  • Hi, this question isn’t for my blog (as I don’t have one hosted here) but for a friend who does have a blog on here.

This would be a simple task were her blog self-hosted, but seems to be impossible since it’s hosted here. She would very much like to have links in her themes main menu (NOT the blog roll) link to her shop on etsy and another her photo album on flickr. It doesn’t make much sense to me why this seems to be disallowed, but you can’t make an outside link your permalink, for some reason it has to be off your domain. Okay, so then I tried a META tag refresh and that’s automatically removed from your page content! I’m not sure how adding META information to your page can be considered a security risk to the point of having them automatically removed!

So then I tried the third option, which I had no hopes for after the above, but I tried a javascript redirect anyways. Still no luck.

Is there ANY way to link to a site outside of wordpress.com from your themes menu, since editing the theme and reuploading is obviously out of the question here?

    Help!

  • You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.

This support forum is for WordPress.com hosted blogs only. If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog you need to seek help at the WordPress.org forums, not here.

If you don’t understand the difference, you may find this information helpful.

  • I’m pretty sure I specified the reason for posting…

  • There are some themes where you can use a trick to put outside URL’s into the navigation tabs and the pages widget.

    Page tabs as extra links

  • And come to think of it, I am not sure that it will work in the pages widget.

  • Thanks sacredpath, I gave that a go and WordPress automagically replaced my space in a href with a non-breaking space ( ) which effectively disabled it. Ah well, thanks again, I guess I’ll just have to talk them into self-hosting ;)

  • It depends on the theme. Some work with it and some do not.

  • @tsp: It does work in the Pages widget (no matter what the theme). As for the header tabs, in some themes it produces the bad results I have documented, not the space substitution mwaterous is talking about.

@mwaterous: The post tsp linked to is mine, and the trick does work. Where did you put the link and where did you put the space? Could you please paste the code here between backticks so we can see?

  • Then what shows up in the pages widget if they have it in the blog as well as the top nav?

  • The link name (with no complications!).

  • I placed Google (No reason for linking to google, I just used it for the test) inside the title of the page, when you click ‘Edit’ the first dialog, and when you click ‘Quick Edit’ in the dialog aptly titled, ‘title’.

It wasn’t accomplishing the desired task, so I loaded the page up and viewed the source. WordPress had changed it to <a href=”http://www.google.com”>Google… hey I got it to work! For some reason, at least in the Greenery theme, you have to add a space in between the A elements opening and closing tag.

    So while…
    Google
    …doesn’t work for whatever reason…
    Google
    …does.

    Go figure.

  • Code between backticks please, so that it will show up instead of functioning!

  • Geez. You’d think I’d never posted here before today, wouldn’t ya? Though to be fair, I have a medical blindspot for fine print showing up underneath this Leave a Reply textarea.

    So while…
    <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a>
    …doesn’t work for whatever reason…
    <a href="http://www.google.com">Google </a>
    …does.

  • Yes, you have to have a space as part of the text for the link. It is peculiar that way for some reason.

  • Oh for crying out loud, it said that in the post too.

I’ve got so many things going on today, cleaning lumber, bleeding my cars hydraulics, etc etc, I’m just not with it. Sorry everybody, and thanks for the help. :)

  • You’re welcome, and not a problem.
