Listing Archives by Category

  1. Is there a way to list/show posts by category or post slug on a page using shortcode?

    For example:
    [archives category='pets']
    [archives slug='cats']

The blog I need help with is magicabooks.wordpress.com.

  2. No there isn't > http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/
This is the format for a category URL
    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/category/categoryname/
And this the format for a category feed on WordPress.com blogs:
    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/category/categoryname/feed/

Are you also aware that you can create a custom menu and include Categories in it?
Staff have provided help for those who want to structure their blog like a website. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

    What’s critical is:
    (1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
    (2) a clear comprehension of the fact that here is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.

A custom menu allows you to display Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages and custom links in your custom menu as well.

    These are the how-to instructions:
How to create Pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
How to create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  3. Will you please post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question?
I strongly suspect you are posting to the wrong support forum for your software due to this > http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/importing-joomla-users-and-passwords-to-wordpress?replies=3#post-622234 If you have a wordpress.ORG install then it runs on different software and we cannot help you here. You must post to http://wordpress.ORG/support/

  4. Thanks for your fast reply!

Yes, this is a wordpress.com site. magicabooks.wordpress.com. I've currently set it to private because the site's not ready, yet. And yes, I know about implementing the category archives on the side menu. I had wanted to have each of the pages linked from the top menu to list things based on category, also.

Since I can't use the archive shortcode to do what I wanted to do, is there a way to embed the RSS feed of category posts into a page using shortcode?
    For example:

    [feed='http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/category/categoryname/feed/']

  5. You can create a custom menu and include Custom links but not by using a shortcode. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links

  6. Thank you again. I'm currently using the Bueno theme, and I'm trying to get the custom menu to show up at the top (under the header). Right now, it's only showing up on the sidebar as a widget. Is there any way to get the menu to show up in both places?

If I make a new page, then the page name shows up at the top underneath the header, instead. Is this something that's theme-specific?

I feel like I'm getting close to what I'm trying to do, but I'm not quite there, yet.

  7. Please simply post the URL for the blog in question so we are not forced to attempt to provide help for a blog we cannot even see.

The Bueno theme has a custom menu. It will display at the top of the blog under the blog title where Pages usually display. You do not need to use the custom menu widget at all - get rid of it here > Appearance > Widgets

Then provide an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question please and we will work from there.

  8. Go back to the custom menu page in the dashboard and in the "theme location" module at upper left select your custom menu from the pulldown and then save.

  9. I assume this is the blog in question and it is set to "private" http://magicabooks.wordpress.com/
    Is that correct or not?

  10. thesacredpath: Thank you! This was exactly what I was trying to do!

I appreciate the help, both of you :) Thank you.
