Major increase in spam comments

  1. My spam-comment queue has experienced an insane increase in volume in the last week - several hundred per day. I have no idea why this has happened - and nearly all appear to come from one person using the same several ip addresses.

    Two questions come to mind:

    1) Is this just happening to me, or is everyone at wordpress.com experiencing the same thing?

    2) Is there some way I can easily report the sites that this person is promoting and/or the ip that they are originating from? I'd like to have some kind of punishment come from this outrageous behavior.

    Thanks in advance!

The blog I need help with is erikhare.wordpress.com.

  2. Just so that you know I'm not talking about a small increase - here are the stats for the last 4 months from akismet:

    Spam detected
    2010-12 3,396
    2010-11 488
    2010-10 624
    2010-09 532

I really want to hurt this person. And I'll bet this isn't fun for WordPress' servers, either. A free service of this quality is worth looking out for, so please let me know what I can do to help make this stop!

  3. Spammers change tactics all the time, and from time to time it will appear they are picking on you, but they aren't. At some point they will go somewhere else. I have two blogs I manage that averaged over 1200 per day for nearly a month and now they are back down to the normal 100 to 150 per day. There are people who get thousands per day.

And good luck getting them punished. There is just about as much likelihood of that happening as the US balancing its budget or having a positive trade balance.

  4. Question
    1) Is this just happening to me, or is everyone at wordpress.com experiencing the same thing?

Answer. Spammers are busy at work everywhere and every day of the year. They now have fired humans to leave fake comments so we have seen an increase over and above bot generated spam. We Volunteers don't have backend access t blogs. I don't know how many spam comments others are getting so I can't answer that.

    Question:
    2) Is there some way I can easily report the sites that this person is promoting and/or the ip that they are originating from? I'd like to have some kind of punishment come from this outrageous behavior.

Answer: No. Moderate your comments and simply mark any "spam" that Akismat does not catch in the fliter as "spam". The presumption it's a single person is probably erroneous. Even if it is these guys can get a new IP at the drop of a hat.

See here for using the Comment Blacklist > http://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/

  5. Well, I did have to ask. Hope it's not too taxing on the servers. Thanks!
