Making Money from a Blog

  1. I would like to create a blog for a start-up business using wordpress.com and want to make sure of a few things:

Can I post my business services and costs on the site?
Can I post ads for related services (that my business would provide) on the same site such as profiles of singles and their information for a matchmaking business as long as it's done tastefully and professionally?

  2. 1) Yes, provided they're not of the "hire me for SEO and make millions" or MLM variety.

    2) No. Not ever.

    3) although you didn't ask, a business site that hosts ads is a business that is advertising "I don't expect to make enough off the actual business, so I'm hosting MeetSwingingSingles.com for a few extra bucks." The only good business blog that hosts ads is Guy Kawasaki's, and the ads are ONLY for companies that he owns.

  3. Sounds like it should work: My wife and I are starting a matchmaking agency. Since we'd own and operate it, and it's matchmaking not website development (which I obviously am no expert on to say the least).

If it's a business website, it would make sense to post costs for services wouldn't it?
Why would anyone be against that, since it's being quite open.

When I ask about singles ads, what I mean is that for a matchmaking business website, it's possible to keep a business matchmaking website separate and different from a dating website (like match.com for example); but it's also possible to combine the two. If it's part of the business's services being offered, that's logical to have that isn't it?

Also, can you suggest any WordPress.com pages on creating business sites using the .com aspect of their company? I want to be very honest and above-board with everything possible.

    Thanks.

  5. 1tess,

I appreciate what you're saying. I think I might have had a problem with not being clear.
But, I found this web page: http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/ and I will contact them directly before proceeding fully. I'd prefer to get full a hosting package, but have a shoestring budget to start with.

Thanks to everyone who posted or does post.

  6. You are almost certainly going to have to find a web host and use software from WordPress.com.

Posting costs for services isn't the issue: I do that myself monthly on my professional website here. Ads is a dealbreaker: not even ads for other businesses you own can be posted here. Whether or not this appears logical to you, it's the rules here. I don't want you to put in a lot of effort on a WP.com site and buy upgrades only to have to move within weeks or lose your blog.

  7. I get what you're saying; but I'm not explaining it well, either. I'd love to see how other businesses are doing it, especially any matchmakers and/or dating websites. Is there any kind of business directory of wordpress.com sites or examples of matchmakers using wordpress.com hosting? I get what you guys have been saying and I think it can be done if I keep the matchmaking separate from the dating website (which will take longer to build a database for anyway).
