We would like to have a zone record created so that the domain 'elizabethchitty.ca' can be mapped to 'elizabethchitty.wordpress.com'.
Does it always require an individual request to map '.CA' domains? And if so, is there any consideration at WordPress to make this 'automagic' in future?

Yes it still requires a zone record. You should contact the Staff to have one added: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
I don't know if it will be made "automatic" in the future and I don't know what is involved in adding a zone record.

Yes, it seemed to happen automagically after a brief passage of time. This, in spite of the warnings and initial refusal. Thank you to the ghost or Happiness Engineer who made it happen! Resolved.
