Last week I purchased the domain kathysheldondavis.com through wordpress with domain name mapping and thought that my present wordpress.com blog would become the .com. I'm not sure I understand what mapping is. What I wanted was my blog at kathysheldondavis.wordpress.com to change to kathysheldondavis.com. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks a bunch!

You need to complete the domain mapping by following through from Step 5 onwards.
To activate your new domain, select the button next to the one you wish to activate and click Update Primary Domain. Your blog will be accessible from both of these domains; the Primary Domain is what actually appears as your domain within the address bar of web browsers. If you do not see your blog at the new domain immediately, please allow some time for the DNS changes to propagate. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/register-domain/#instructions-for-registering-a-new-domain-for-your-blog
It looks like you got everything but the last step correct:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
After the purchase is complete, go back to the Store -> Domains page, select the radio button next to the domain you just mapped to your blog, and click the Update Primary Domain button.
