maximum number of pages for a blog address?

  1. What is the maximum number of pages for a blog address? I want to start a blog for a high school reunion, using a page called "People" and one sub page for up to 90 individuals. Can I do that?

The blog I need help with is rogersyear2012.wordpress.com.

  2. I don't think there is a limit. Though 90 links on a top navigation menu would be a lot! Even with a drop-down…

Maybe a menu widget in the sidebar?
so they would appear in alphabetical order would be the thing to use:

  3. Yes, I thought that there would be a page called 'People' and then sub-pages, one for each person or two (it's a small class). Your suggestion of a menu widget is what I was hoping for. Thanks much for the reference.

NEXT question: Does wordpress allow me to develop a custom template (to use for all those individual people pages)?

  5. Well. Each theme has page templates. But not so much as though you could stick in a picture, a bio, and contact info.

Which theme are you thinking to use?

I could help you set up a format to fill in what specific info you want for each person.

  6. You could make a template page with the fields in it etc and formatted the way you want - then copy the page (use the Text ) option to make sure formatting transfers - keep the template page as a draft and copy as many times as needed - I have used something like this a few times - bit clumsy but after a few times not so bad

  7. That is what I am offering to do for the OP. Some basic shape so he/she can fill in information about each person. But I'd need to know some details about what he/she wants…

  8. No charge, btw. Just foolish what goes around comes around…

  9. 1Tess,

Thanks. Haven't picked a theme yet. I use 2011 for my own writing blog (johnbairdrogers.com). This is for my wife's reunion. I'll check with her on format, but I suppose 2 slots for pictures at the top, then a text. Might be able to do it just by dropping pictures in. Maybe no template?

Also, for this kind of project, do you have a favorite theme?

  11. For what I understand you want to do I'd suggest a theme like Chateau or more like Imbalance 2 (there are others with that sort of magazine style, but those are the ones I'm most familiar with) because they both show lots of posts via custom excerpts so you could show many posts at a time with pictures of the classmates.

I'm assuming the two pictures would be "high school" and "today"?

I'd suggest using posts rather than pages because you can easily show them, edit them, and arrange them. Less cumbersome than pages. Plus you can make an index page without much trouble.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

You probably don't need a complicated template. Just insert the two pictures both aligned left, followed by text. You might need a code snippet to make the text stay below the pictures, but that is simple to cut and paste as needed.
    <br style="clear:both;"></br>

For the two themes I suggested, you would then copy / paste the two pictures into the custom excerpt field and voilá you have a page full of pictures of your (wife's) old classmates. You can set the number of posts to appear on your front page. I'm not sure if the whole class would be there, but it's easy enough to go back to older post pages…

Let me know if this sounds like what you'd like?

  12. That sounds like a much better idea than mine, particularly if I can make "an index page without much trouble." Could it appear as:
    Jane Doe
    Jim Smith
    Arnold Blucher
    Anyone Anyone

(But I liked the idea of running it down the column on the right or left)

  13. @Tess
The limit for the custom menu is 88 pages.

  14. @timethief
    Thanks!
I remember reading that very recently. I couldn't find the thread easily, but that is not what I'm thinking this fellow should do.

A custom menu is a lot of work and he'd run into that limit.
    88? or 89?
at any rate, not enough. and who wants to navigate such a huge menu even in a sidebar!

  15. @fretlessjohn

You can make an index page using the archives shortcode. There is no limit to the number of posts displayed with it.

To begin, make a post for each person.

Posts have dates, so you will use dates to organize the posts. First make an alphabetical list of the classmates. Name the post with the name of the person, and edit the date for Arron 90 days ago, for Benton 89 days ago, for Caruso 88 days ago. You get the idea? You are correlating the dates with their alphabetic order.

You wouldn't even need to put content besides the name into the post. This is a step to organize your site. Publish each post, as you go along, with the edited date and voilá you have an alphabetical list of the classmates on your page with the archives widget.

Does this make sense to you?

  16. @Tess
Up to 88 is okay. Sorry I don't have time to search. I'm watching my other computers as they are running programs with data I need for my contracted work right now and have to be vigilant. I also agree that an index page with the archive shortcode on it is the way to go.

  17. @timethief,

It doesn't matter for this case, but if I had time I could look as well.

I'm busy with my work-website on .org. It involves a board of directors who seem to be building a camel—Someone once said "a camel is simply a horse designed by a committee. Everyone has input i and the result is ..."

But with an index page based on archive shortcode, this class reunion site could be really nice. A lot of work to organize and set up, but once that part is done, it will be very useable. And straightforward to fill in the details for each person.

  18. 1tess,
Thanks for your help, and sorry for the late response. Your post idea sounds very sensible. I'll look at your reference to an index page and your themes. Invaluable help, and thanks.

A camel is a horse designed by committee. We could continue on to the rest of the saying, but we are, after all, in polite company.

  19. Indeed.
    polite company
needless to note, but that saying won't appear on the site

Almost done with the camel, so if you need more details about my ideas for your site feel free to ask: I have subscribed to this thread so I'll see your post…
