migrating from KNOL

  1. You're welcome!

We should hopefully be hearing back from Google soon. Worse-case scenario, we can manually import from your export file, but the redirect (your Knol to your WordPress.com blog) will need to be done on Google's end.

  2. Hi, it's not a worst case scenario, it would be very good ! doing the redirect manualy is fine ! The boring part is to transfert the pictures, and the vidéos one by one!

    Thanks for your time

  3. Just in case Google can't help us, I'm going to send an email to the email address on your account. Once you receive it, would you please reply with your export files attached?

  4. the main export file is something like 40 MB

  5. We should be able to receive it. If not, can you upload it somewhere like Dropbox?

  6. If you do upload it elsewhere, reply to the email as that will be private.

  7. no, the upload limit in gmail is 25 MB, sorry

yes I will Dropbox it this evening, sorry I'm leaving for work

have you received the small one ?

    thanks a lot

  8. Yep, I have the small one. Feel free to send the other one via Dropbox, Usendit, etc when you can.

  9. I just wanted to let you know that we have heard back from Google, and they are moving the request to a different department now that they know what the issue is.

So, at least there is some movement.

  10. Hi J. thanks for this following; Oh, they have different departments, walking deads, zombies, vampires ?

What I plan to do now is to create a number of pages, with just the title of my ex-knols in WordPress, and set the redirections, I will fill them one by one later, when I have time.

Do you think I can create those "empty" pages with no trouble ?

    regards

  11. No need to fill them in yet. If Google can't help, we can still import directly from your export files.

Please hang in there for another day or two if you can, or would you like us to just do the import now?

  12. NO worries, yes we can certainly wait some more time, provided I will have the time to set the redirections

  13. You certainly should. We'll let you know as soon as we hear back.

  14. OK cheers, have a good Easter week end

  15. You too!

  16. Hi James, I think there's no more hope...so we should proceed. Written a full new paper yesterday, directly in WordPress for the first time : http://kn0l.wordpress.com/fare-huahine/

  17. Not a problem, I have put in the request to manually process your import from the export files you sent. We'll let you know as soon as it's done.

  18. "Dear Dary, I'm very upset

Thanks for sending that along, Stephane. I was able to download it, but it is unfortunately not in the format that our importer can accept.

what ? err, the file are HTML ? what does your "importer" accept ?

Generally, Google converts from the zip file format into our import format, and we take it from there. It seems that maybe Google's having a problem with the conversion.

obviously G has a problem, otherwise I would be doing the automatic conversion, but what are you talking about "our import format", can't you be more specific ? what are we doing here ?

I've put in a request for some assistance with some contacts who've usually been pretty responsive,

what "some contact", still you lack completely any clarity, do you mean "contact at Google" ? they will not answer mate, James has already tried, please are we in the movie "Groundhog Day" ?

and I'll update you as soon as I have any word back from them. My hope is that the WordPress-compatible export file can be generated on their end and sent to me manually, so that I can then do the import for you. Thanks,

what do you call "wordPress-compatible export file" ? why are talking to me like if I were a mentally impaired person ?

  19. Sorry for the trouble. We'll continue to work via email and reply as soon as we can.

  20. Sorry to be nervous, but look at what Daryl sent me ??? have you done some feedback to your programmers about what I told you before regarding the .mht format ? THIS is a good format to export/import web pages I think, why everybody is ignoring it ? Now if you give me a NAME for the format you need, maybe I can do something ?

  21. Yes, I have actually been working with Daryl on this. It's a good format, but we're unable to accept it.

When the automated migration happens, their MHT export file is translated into a WXR file for us.

Unfortunately, we are unable to do this ourselves and still need assistance from Google.

  22. I'm not following you ?

"Yes, I have actually been working with Daryl on this. It's a good format, but we're unable to accept it." sure, that's why programmer are made for, they can PROGRAM something so you can then accept it

"When the automated migration happens, their MHT export file is translated into a WXR file for us." I don't understand : 1 their AM doesn't work 2 do you mean they are actually making mht exports ?

"Unfortunately, we are unable to do this ourselves and still need assistance from Google." I think they WILL NOT ASSIST US, haven't you allready ask for their assistance ? don't you understand what is happening ? they DONT CARE

  23. We do not have the tools to translate their proprietary MHT files to the WXR files that we need.

We do need Google's assistance with this, and we are trying the best we can to get some attention on this.

  24. it's the first time I'm told their file are a kind of mht, are you talking about the export files used in the "automatic" transfer or the files we have in the download I sent to you ?

Google will not give any attention to this problem, they cease to have any interest in KNol, knols and knolauthors a long time ago, are you dreaming ?

the question I have just asked to DAryl, can't we make wxr export ourselves ?

  25. it's the first time I'm told their file are a kind of mht, are you talking about the export files used in the "automatic" transfer or the files we have in the download I sent to you ?

I'm referring to the files that you sent us. They are standard files, HTML, JPG, etc, but they are bound together in a format considered MHT.

It's like filing vehicle registration in a country where no one speaks English. You have kind of an idea of what to do, but the form makes no sense.

Google will not give any attention to this problem, they cease to have any interest in KNol, knols and knolauthors a long time ago, are you dreaming ?

I'm hoping they will give us some attention. If you want your Knol on WordPress.com, that's the best we can do right now.

the question I have just asked to DAryl, can't we make wxr export ourselves ?

    No, we cannot. See above.

  26. "they are bound together in a format considered MHT." Ok, just surprised you did not tell me that the first time I spoke about mht

"I'm hoping they will give us some attention. If you want your Knol on WordPress.com, that's the best we can do right now." are you aware of how many people were able to migrate automatically, and how many people couldn't ?

who has devised the automated migration ? those guys at Annotum (? what is it apart from a theme, do they have an office somewhere ? in a country where no one speaks english maybe ?)

weren't they supposed to do exactly that :making a wxr with knol pages ? why are they so bad ?

  27. Ok, just surprised you did not tell me that the first time I spoke about mht

I was hopeful we could go around that, sorry!

are you aware of how many people were able to migrate automatically, and how many people couldn't ?

Of all the folks that I have helped migrate automatically, you are the first that didn't. I can't speak for the rest, but I do know that we have not had one as bad as this.

weren't they supposed to do exactly that :making a wxr with knol pages ? why are they so bad ?

Well, that's the problem. Google's automated migration turns their export into a WXR, and their automated migration engine is not working for you.

  28. most of my knols are co-written with my daughter, I tried the automatic migration from her account as well, and it did not work.

do you think the problem could come from the fact all our knols have two authors ?

mmmm, I don't understand how you have "helped" people who have migrated "automatically", franckly, it's an oxymore

  29. do you think the problem could come from the fact all our knols have two authors ?

That is possible, but I have seen some multi-author blogs import without issue. Hopefully Google will clear that up.

mmmm, I don't understand how you have "helped" people who have migrated "automatically", franckly, it's an oxymore

By that I mean folks who ask how to import, I show them the way, and they import without issue.

  30. Hopefully Google will clear that up.

    you are very credulous

By that I mean folks who ask how to import, I show them the way, and they import without issue.

I think a lot of people actually must have given up, when they saw it was not working, unless I'm proven the contrary, this is my belief James, maybe it's just a question of age, when I was yours probably I was also very naive.... cheers, enjoy the rest of your week end, bye
