Migrating from Local Host to WordPress.org Hosted Solution

  • We were hosting a local install of wordpress, however due to security/ maintenance concerns I’ve been asked to move it to a wordpress.com site. I’ve seen lots of instructions on how to migrate the other way, but is there best practices for moving data onto a wordpress.com.

Also our site is currently down & we might not want to bring the wordpress install back to life, is there anyway to pay wordpress.com to migrate the data for us? I see it is $129 to move the other direction.

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • We do not provide support for local installs of WordPress.ORG software here to WordPress.COM.

There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install plugins.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

The Guide Transfer upgrade is only for moving WordPress.com blog content into WordPress.org installs.

The way we can move content into free hosted WordPress.com blogs is by way of importing an XML export file. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

  • Was your local install visible to the internet? You might be able to move to a .ORG install without bringing up the old site – you would get help over at WordPress.ORG – but if you can bring up the old site for a few days (a few hours if the name servers and such were not changed (you just pulled the plug on the site itself) ) – then you can do an export / import as noted above – the reason you want to old site up and needing to be visible on the internet is the export file does not have the media in it – only links to the media (pictures, files etc.) so any import without a site up live will not bring in any media –

If your install was “local” in that it was never visible or reachable from the internet then you are a bit stuck to move it directly to here and would need help from WordPress.ORG – if the old site was not visible on the internet but you have an Export / .xml file you should be able to import the file but all the media would be missing – but the text should show up

  • @auxclass
    Thanks for wading in here.

  • You all be welcome – this is one of these we don’t yet have enough info give a full answer – they should be able to move it but depending on many factors it might not be straight forward

    good luck to the OP
