migrating my existing wordpress site over to wordpress.com

  1. migrating my existing wordpress site over to wordpress.com

will this be possible or not, please advise.

The blog I need help with is sitemodelinc.wordpress.com.

  2. Yes it's possible to move content for a self hosted WordPress.org install into a free hosted WordPress.com blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-org

However, please read this first so you understand all the restrictions. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  3. Thank you for the reply.

To be more specific, I wanted to start with the 99 per year plan.

I dont know if that changes anything.

Can one install themes as is done with a wordpress.org site under themes.

I am unclear from your answer.

  4. No you can't create your own theme or import another one. We do not have FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we not able to upload any third party themes.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

The only themes you can use on a free hosted WordPress.com blog are those found here > Appearance > Themes and showcased here > http://wordpress.com/themes/

The $99 upgrade you can purchase does not change anything at all stated clearly here > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  5. What i want to do is take my self hosted wordpress.org type site over and have it now hosted at wordpress.com.

    And does the theme matter?

  6. See this page please for details http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ Note that none of the plans allow you to upload your own themes or plugins. If you need a site that requires a custom theme or plugins — or if you want to be able to sell things directly from your site, or you want to install discussion forums then a self-hosted WordPress site is what you need.

  7. And does the theme matter?

Export files contain only the actual blog content (posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, etc.) . They do NOT contain the theme. They do not contain plugins. They do not contain widgets.

  8. You keep referring to the free WordPress etc., this is the wrong context.

Whilst at the moment I am on the free blog, since I just signed up, I want the paid plan since it offers many other things such as using my own domain.

Seems as though I am trapped in you freebie world point of reference and thus get a muddled and indirect answer.

  9. My answer is not muddled.
All WordPress.com blogs are free blogs.
All WordPress.com blogs here are free hosted.
All upgrades are 1 year subscriptions for 1 blog only and are for specific features only such as those stated here http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/
No upgrades change anything at all stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ because the blog is still a free blog being free hosted by WordPress.com http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  10. You can't bring your theme over. You can't use ads, javascript, iframes, paid posts, or affiliate marketing. Other than that, sure, you can do an import easily. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/
