Migrating to wordpress.org install - XML import problems

  1. I'm trying to migrate much of my content from my current .com install, over to a new Dreamhost managed .org installation.

We've registered a second domain for testing, and will redirect the old domain once the migration and bugs are worked out.

One problem I run into - we've exported our content as an XML, and imported it into the new site, including all content and media - but I'm missing some content - specifically recent blog posts. We've done this a few times now - each time, I'm careful to assign all authors to new authors on the .org site, but it misses some - even some posted by the same authors.

    Thoughts and guidance?

The blog I need help with is nespahtens.com.

  3. I am, thanks.

  4. You're welcome.

  5. What is the URL of the blog you exported from, and what are the titles of some of the missing posts?

DUH ... I'm crawling under a rock for missing the obvisous. Sorry. I'm over-tired.

  7. That's perfectly fine, thanks for marking this for our attention! :)

  8. The original blog:

    http://www.nespahtens.com

    The new blog:

http://www.newenglandspahtens.com (although, ultimately, we want to use the original URL - perhaps both).

Today, we posted this blog post to the old blog (before I tried an export/import)

    http://nespahtens.com/2013/02/28/recipe-slow-cooker-chicken-curry/

and it doesn't appear on the new site. There are several posts that don't - and several that do - with blogs missing in between. For example, the entire "Featured Athlete" series shows, but the posts we made between them (they are weekly) - do not.

  9. That post is definitely in the export file, so I'd assume that the others are too.

As the posts are in the export file, that's really all we can guarantee, as we only have control over the WordPress.com end of things.

Personally, I'd recommend trying the import again. It shouldn't duplicate anything, and it may find what it missed. If that doesn't work, I recommend asking at http://wordpress.org/support/ for assistance with the import.

  10. Yeah, I've exported / imported more than a few times - seems hit or miss which content comes over.

I'll reach out to the Support team. Thanks.

  11. You're welcome!
