Migration problems

I have been trying for 2 days to migrate my wordpress.com blog to self hosted at BlueHost following both the instructions on this site and their site. Neither they nor I can get the file that I "exported" here to upload "there". After trying several methods, the last attempt gives an error message that says "XML file specified was either malformed or incomplete." which leads me to think there is a problem with the export from wordpress.com. I have exported it about 8 different times over the past two days. I am out of ideas.

The blog I need help with is accordingtocarey.com.

  3. Howdy,

I'm sorry to hear about all of the failed attempts! Have you tried exporting and importing in chunks, as in not exporting one "all content" file, but multiple ones broken down by, say, year by years for posts, another for pages, etc?

The total export file for your site was 23 MB, which did import fine on one of my WordPress.org test installs, but failed on another as the server timed out processing the relatively large file.

Splitting it up into smaller pieces wouldn't tax the importing server as much and would be a good next step to attempt.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything else. Thanks timethief for the help!

I can certainly try that; will Iose anything doing it that way?

  5. When you break it up - you want to make sure that you don't forget to export all the parts

OK, I think I got it transferred. There seemed to be a little hangup with the "feedback" section, but I'm not overly concerned about loosing that right now.

Thanks for your quick feedback and help!

  7. You be welcome & good luck

  8. Glad we could get you squared away. The feedbacks section is a bit unique to WordPress.com, but if you have the Jetpack plugin installed and activated, that area of your Dashboard will appear.

Generally, the Feedback information that is most commonly found is responses to contact forms placed on your site, as well as poll results or ratings if you've used those features previously.

    Cheers!
