Missing freshly pressed

  1. My blue header bar is missing the "freshly pressed" link lately. Has this feature been removed or moved? Or are maybe only german/international user affected?

I'm using Firefox 19.0 on Ubuntu 12.04 and I have cleared cache and cookies (just in case you would ask) ;)

The blog I need help with is iqatrophie.wordpress.com.

  2. Anyone?

  3. http://wordpress.com/#!/read/fresh/
Click the "W" on your admin bar and it's listed as an option in the dropdown menu.

I have the same problem. The W on the admin bar doesn't work either here - it also defaults to "blogs I follow". I'm also unable to access Freshly pressed today.
For what it's worth, I'm based in Spain (Barcelona)

  5. Hi Tess,

your link as well as the one at the "W" in my admin bar redirects to http://wordpress.com/#!/read/following/ for me. Just like alastairsavage describes.

Meanwhile I found two other recent topics in the forum and thought I'll add the URLs here for the sake of completeness. :)

Is your link working for you? Do you see the freshly pressed blogs or are you redirected as well? If it works for you, maybe it really only affects international users? Just guessing.

    Cheers

Looks ok now. So, is it resolved? Was it a bug? Does it look ok to everyone else?

    It's back for me! :)

  9. Hmm, not for me. Still redirecting to http://wordpress.com/#!/read/following/

  10. It's there for me too.

Is it back for you yet? If not, can you access http://wordpress.com/#!/read/fresh/ directly?

  11. Hm, that's no good.

Any luck if you switch you language to English at http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/ ? Or, is it already English?

  12. Yep, if I switch my language at http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/ to english (from german) the Freshly Pressed link in the blue header reappears and is working as well. As soon as I switch back to german, the link disappears and all links to Freshly Pressed stop working.

I don't know if this has got something to do with it, but I noticed that my "My Blogs" tab is a messed up again. The text breaks into a new line which result in a lonely blog icon in an empty line. I've asked about it at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/my-blogs-tab-is-messed-up and haven't heard back. Strangely when Automattic decided to switch to the new layout (with the blue header bar) the "My blogs" tab looked good again, but as of today it's messed up again.

Maybe someone is fiddling around with all this at the moment. Don't know.

  13. Thanks for checking that!

    We're looking into this.

  14. That was indeed an intentional change.

The automatically-selected posts for the non-English Freshly Pressed sections were becoming very hit and miss (some languages more than others), so the decision was made to temporarily remove all non-English Freshly Pressed sections until we can find a better solution.

  15. I'm not absolutely sure what you mean by "hit and miss". Do you mean something like there were good days and bad days?

What exactly means "temporarily"? Are you working on a solution at the moment and we'll see it return in some weeks or is it a bigger problem that takes more time?

Why haven't we been notified e.g. at the Modlook P2 when you disable a feature like this? This would help us answering possible upcoming questions in the international forums.

    Cheers

  16. I'm not absolutely sure what you mean by "hit and miss". Do you mean something like there were good days and bad days?

I mean, sometimes there were great posts, sometimes there were "OMG, this video, LOLz" posts, and sometimes there were splogs. It was largely an automated system, and some languages suffered worse than others.

What exactly means "temporarily"? Are you working on a solution at the moment and we'll see it return in some weeks or is it a bigger problem that takes more time?

The plan is to have something eventually, but it can't be what we had. The automated system just wasn't working. It needs either better filters, a more human touch, or some kind of magic. We're still still trying to figure out the whats and the hows.

Why haven't we been notified e.g. at modlook.wordpress.com when you disable a feature like this? This would help us answering possible upcoming questions in the international forums.

That was my fault entirely, sorry! I left the reply here and had a fit of OCD and went "Oooo, shiny!" somewhere else.

  17. Thanks a lot for going in detail and taking the time. Guess my question is answered. :)

I hope you find a good solution so that we'll see some freshly pressed international blogs in the near future.

    Cheers

  18. By the way, when I said "... when you disable a feature like this" I wasn't speaking about you specifically but Automattic in general. I get the impression you weren't informed about the take down as well because you had to check for yourself before answering my question.

It would be nice to inform us either prior to disabling a feature or at least shortly after you've done it and not to let it find out ourselves.

  19. You're welcome!

I'm going to do my best to try to tighten up communication with our volunteer moderators, hopefully there won't be anymore lapses.
