   I have been blogging for only a few months, but I thought that self-pingbacks used to be automatic. I would get an email merely notifying me of my own pingback (as a comment). Recently, though, the emails changed -- they now ask me to APPROVE those pingbacks. I like having self pingbacks, but what happens if I don't go in and manually approve each one? It just seems like an extra step to have to moderate my own "comments," when I have set my account so I don't have to approve subsequent comments from regular readers.

   If you want to post your self-pings then your only way of doing that is to approve them along with the comments. Here all pingbacks and trackbacks are founf in the comments queque and are treated the same way as comments are tread. If you do not approve them then I believe they may remain in the comments queque but I don't know that for sure because I choose to delete most of my self-pings.

   I am not sure which email you may be referring to. I fon't know who is telling your to approve pingbacks or if they are referring to your self-pings or other pingbacks. Maybe what they simply mean is that the only way we have to deal with pingbacks and trackbacks the same way we deal with comments.

   If "they" are not referring to self-pings then I am keenly aware of how much trackback and pingback spam there is.    I just saw this issue too. I linked an older post from one I just published and I had to manually approve the pingback. I think this is slightly ridiculous: I should not have to approve my own comments or pingbacks. Perhaps this should go into the suggestions forum for the WP team to change?

   It's not an issue. It's the way the software works. If you wish you can stop self pings. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pingbacks/#can-i-stop-self-pings
