Can I post my own ads in my wordpress.com hosted blog? I plan on buying domain mapping, custom css, and later on I will buy the removal of WordPress' ads. But I was wondering if I could start adding them now? Or do I have to buy a certain feature like the No-Ads option? Or is it completely prohibited? I was thinking of something simple, along the lines of Google ads. Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated.

You can revoke ads on your site. But can not place your own ads. However, wordpress.com has something brilliant for sites having a large amount of visitors. See here http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
The Ad Control for wordpress is in Beta and they only took a select few blogs for testing. I average over 60,000 views per month but WordPress said they are not taking on any more blogs. Perhaps in the future if a slot opens up, but not now.
Thanks for the information guys. Although I'm pretty disappointed with their closed ad system for us. I think I'm better off hosting my own wordpress blog.
