I created another account so that I could post this message. Does anyone know why it's doing this?

  2. This thread is flagged for Staff attention. What is your other username please?

  3. Thanks for your help. My other username is rodgithens. I've pasted the original post below. I don't understand why they can't add the plugin to enable editing of URLs. That's a pretty basic feature if you're using wordpress as a website.

I am moving a set of PDF files from my old google site to my new wordpress.com site. I need the URLs to be exactly the same as they are on my google site because the URLs are publicized elsewhere. The problem is that wordpress uses a funky format with the date in the URL. I can find any way to edit the URLs for media uploads.

Here's what I need the URLs to look like:
    http://www.mysite.com/subdirectory/filename.pdf

I need the ".pdf" in there, so just creating a page under the subdirectory won't work, as far as I can tell. I've seen that the "Pretty Link" plugin, but apparently that's not available on wordpress.com. Are there any other solutions??

I haven't paid for the premium usage yet, because if I can't edit these URLs, wordpress.com won't be an option for me.

WordPress.COM is a multiuser blogging platform. There is no FTP access to our free hosted WorPress.com blogs and we bloggers can't install plugins for security reasons. http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/ Also note that there is no upgrade you can purchase that allows FTP access and the ability to install plugins. Only those with WordPress.org installs can use plugins http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  5. Hi,
Yeah, I understand that wordpress.com is multiuser, but this page says they install some plug-ins for everyone to use:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

It just seems that controling the URLs for your uploads is a pretty basic feature for an CMS. I've worked with multiple CMSs over the years and haven't ever seen one where you can't control URL formatting. I'm hoping that maybe I'm overlooking some trick to edit them. Alternatively, I'd be interested in hear if wordpress.com is considering adding functionality like this.

  6. Hi there,

I'm not sure why your other username was going into the spam filter. I left the other posts spammed since at this point those would be duplicate threads. I have unspammed the response above so it will appear normally.

We are not currently considering adding that functionality. You can do things like that with WordPress.org, however, so you may want to consider that platform.

Do you have any other questions that I can help with?

  7. Unfortunately, it's not possible to customize the URLs of your uploads on WordPress.com.

If that's a feature you need, you might want to investigate a self-hosted WordPress.org site, where you'd definitely have that flexibility.

Alternatively, I'd be interested in hear if wordpress.com is considering adding functionality like this.

    I'm afraid not, sorry.

  8. I understand. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, we can't implement every feature folks might want on WordPress.com, and for many of those folks, going the self-hosted route is a good option.

If you need anything else, just let us know.
