My RSS Feed can't be right.

  • I hope this turns out to be a rather easy question. I’m still a little confused about RSS Feeds. I know what they are and do but I’ve not seen anyone else’s RSS Feed widget end up looking like mine.

If someone could please take a look at my blog and tell me what I did wrong. I’m hoping to make it look simple, without all the text; just the logo with RSS Feed by it.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • The RSS widget can be used for any feed however it’s commonly used for feeds on other blogs you follow ie. not your own blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-widget/

To me posting your own feed in an RSS widget on the front page of the blog makes no sense. It results in duplicate content takes up lots of space and IMO ought to be replaced with a Recent Posts widget which can display links to more of your posts and take up far less space doing it.

To make it easy for your readers to stay updated when you post new content or receive new comments post an RSS Links widget http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-links-widget/

To provide the ability to subscribe to your posts you can post a follow blog widget in your sidebar > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/

  • That’s what I was trying to do. I absolutely don’t want the widget that’s there, repeating my blog post. I just want the usual, simple logo for people to click on when they want to receive my blog posts via RSS Feed.

Apparently I used the wrong RSS Feed Widget. Thanks for your help.

One last question: In the Format dropdown menu, what is the most common choice? (I just don’t want to irritate people.) Do most people prefer the Text Link, Image Link, or Text and Image Link?

  • Hi there,
I’m an experienced blogger in the over 50 demographic age group. I recommend a text link only. The fancy smancy images and blather simply increase page loading time and I’m into Minimalist Blogging and my motto is strip it!

  • Thank you so much. I am definitely into minimalism. I’m 46 and I really enjoy the simplicity of things and want my blog to offer that same experience to others. I also wanted to make sure I was considering what most people prefer. The increased page loading time was something I hadn’t thought of.

Thank you for the link, too. I’ll be checking it out shortly — and eagerly.

I’m sorry for throwing one last question in, but it’s in the name of minimalism. The widget offers RSS Feed for posts and comments. Which one or both? I’ve never seen that on anyone’s blog. It’s usually always just a little icon that says RSS Feed. Is that possible? I’m excluding the title, too, since I’ve never seen one on a blog.

  • And, I promise, I’ve been going through the tutorial and not just running here in a panic. I’ll eventually get the hang of it, I’m sure. It’s just that internet and technical lingo is not my strong suit. That’s why I appreciate your kind help and patience!
