I was trying to be helpful, and created a blog using my account (ZenDoodles) for my husband (Mike DeVeaux) where we will probably both post. But now he can't register the username (mikedeveaux) because it's already taken by the blog I just created. Do I need to delete the blog and start over, and will that actually release the username anyway?

Deleting a blog will not release the username. Usernames/blognames are forever and cannot be taken by anyone else. Unfortunately he can never have that username now. The only thing possible: He can sign up under a different username, and you can then invite that username to be an administrator on mikedevaux. That gives him access to the blog. Then in his user profile he can change his 'wrong' username to display publicly as 'mikedevaux'. That should work, I think.
