Name Already Taken (UNLIKE OTHERS)

I really, really want the domain: nuclearsoup.wordpress.com for my band, Nuclear Soup, but I cannot get it.

Before you just reply without reading the rest, take this into consideration: when I try to register the name, it says that it has already been taken, but when I go to nuclearsoup.wordpress.com, it says, "This Blog has been deleted. The content is no longer available. Click here to get your own wordpress blog."

It's not like this is an actual blog, but rather a deleted blog that is caught in limbo between an official and an actual delete. I don't think that this is technically "recycling" a blog name, since it was deleted by the user.

    Thanks. :)

  2. Blog names here at wordpress.com are not recycled. All blogs that are deleted by users will come up with the same "this blog has been deleted" page if you type the URL into a browser. It's how it works here.

My situation is similar, name is taken (Nov 2007), but instead of being deleted, it was never used. The name I want is devia.wordpress.com -- De'VIA is short for Deaf View/Image Art. A different post, closed now, says to contact the person on their blog to find out, but if they're not using the blog????

So how can I find the person and get the name from them? No, I don't want to change it a little bit, the name really means something.

  4. Try contacting the blogger.

  5. Please don't put your email address in the forums! You are just asking for spam. Mods - please delete

Ah, well, I used an email address I don't care about, not my main one. That's how I handle it. And mac.com is pretty good about junk mail filtering.

    I Just found http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/recycling-blog-names/

but... how can I contact a blogger who isn't using a blog? If they aren't using the blog, they probably aren't getting emails that a blog has a comment, now, are they?

I understand wordpress's desire to not recycle blogs, and it makes sense. But they should have access to the name/email addy of the person who opened the blog and can pass that on to legitimate requests.

My question is why did you start this thread knowing this already ?
    your statement proves you did.

My mistake you're not the OP

    Still my Question stands

but... how can I contact a blogger who isn't using a blog? If they aren't using the blog, they probably aren't getting emails that a blog has a comment, now, are they?

Why did you post to this thread if you already knew the answer ?
your statement proves you knew you couldn't have the the URL because
there is no way to get a hold of the blogger.

Next time don't waste the volunteer's time here in the forums with nonsense
questions that you already have the answer to.
there are bloggers with more serious questions.

  9. Deaf View/Image Art is a perfectly good name. No need to register De'VIA at all.

  10. Recently someone else wanted a blog name that was taken, but the blog abandoned. Somehow they managed to contact the blog owner and the blog was transferred to the new owner. So don't give up hope. Leave a comment or see if they have contact info on that blog. Doesn't cost anything to try.

But, if the name is taken and you can't contact the blogger, then pick something else. No point in getting yourself into a tizzy.

My statement only proves that I suspected there was no way. I was hoping that I would be wrong and someone would have some other ideas.

Other online programs that I've joined have procedures for deleting inactive accounts. One that I use sends me an email message if I haven't used it for awhile saying your free account will expire if you don't log in... you can keep the account open without logging in if you pay a fee. Computer does this, not a person, so there's no time involved once it's set up. It's a good way to keep free accounts from being abused.

Yes, Deaf View/Image Art is a perfectly good name. I may consider that. And yes, I don't want to get myself into a tizzy. Just think there should be other options than just "that's the way we do it here."

  12. @purpleswirlarts,

The next best thing you can do is Contact staff & see what they have to say.

  13. Since the author has actually deleted the blog, rather than just being inactive, why should it not be made available again? I can understand that inactive users are not kicked out in case they want to use the account again in the future, but if the author has actually deleted it then why can it not be recycled?

  14. Blogs that have been deleted by the owner stay deleted. That's the staff answer, end of story.

Think about it: you have a blog for a while then delete it for personal reasons. We let someone else take over the name. A year later you get an angry phone call from a friend or relative who has clicked on an old bookmark, reads something offensive, and thinks the blog still belongs to you. Deleted blogs stay deleted precisely to prevent that from happening.

It's possible that one day we will recycle blog names that have been registered but never used (particularly those stockpiled by squatters and spammers). But we will not recycle blog names that have previously had content. Absolutely not. That's the answer you'll get if you contact support. No exceptions. Don't bother asking unless you want a personalized "no".

If you contact the owner of a blog and they agree to hand it over to you, that's fine - but it's none of our business. Support staff won't get involved, and we won't (can't) un-delete blogs just so you can do that.

  15. Every time I see this thread I think "and just how, exactly, is it unlike the others?" and of course it isn't.

  16. Yes, that's been amusing me too. I really want to suggest that the thread be renamed: Name Already Taken (EXACTLY LIKE ALL THE OTHER THOUSANDS OF THREADS ABOUT THIS).
