Need help chosing a theme

    I am not sure if this is the best place where to ask... I am making a website/blog for my band.

    I am interested in having a header image with a short text description about who we are and then have some "featured" videos of us playing. I can't really find a good combination of theme + widgets to achieve that.

    Especially video embedding seems to be very weak. I can embed videos only in posts where most themes who support having "featured posts" would not let me embed videos in there...

    Creating a custom page would not help so much since it looks like I can just have a mono-column layout and I can't really organize the page the way I want from the internal editor...

    What are your suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    There are no themes here that allow us to embed videos and widgets into headers of our themes. We cannot edit themes or templates as we are on a multiuser blogging platform. That means all templates are shared by those using the same theme. Only Staff can edit as every edit they make affects all blogs wearing the same theme. That can be done on a self hosted WordPress.com self hosted install.

    The Modularity Lite theme at WordPress.com has a front page slideshow but does not allow for embedding widgets or videos in the header.

    That's not surprising to me as I have been here for 5 years and have yet to see the ability to embed widgets of any kind in any areas other than in sidebars and/or bottom bar widget areas.

    My suggestion remains the same. If you really want what you have stated above it's not possible on a free blog being free hosted by WordPress.com, but is possible on a WordPress.org install.

    As you have noted we can embed videos into posts and pages. Did you notice that we can embed videos in our sidebars by using a vodpod widget?

    There are many themes that have a selection of multiple column layouts we can choose to use at WordPress.com. We can also purchase an annually renewable Custom design upgrade that allows editing of the CSS stylesheet only. You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com, but there are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.
