I'm brand new to this forum, and have no idea how to reach the area where I can list 'tags' that'll connect "my" blog to search engines.

That depends on what you mena by "TAG". For technorati tagging read:
http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2005/10/14/a-tagging-bookmarklet-for-wordpress-and-wordpresscom-users/
Your categories are also tags which will pick up your posts in the wordpress tag system.
Search engines will get to your blog eventually anyway, as long as you have the "allow search engines" option ticked in your options.
There might also be information in the FAQ that will be useful.
