I'm tempted to re-focus my blog to highlight the images, I like the look of the new premium theme 'Avid'. Can anyone confirm whether it loads correctly across all browsers, I'm particularly concerned about IE8.

The easiest way to test if a new theme works with a particular browser is to create a second blog, make it private and use it just for testing themes. Most of us do that.
All WordPress.com themes are compatible with the most recent versions of browsers in this case from IE8 and upwards. However, do note that IE10 is under development and IE9 is the most stable recent version of IE.
The Avid theme is a premium theme and read-access to the premium themes forum is now open to all users so you can search to see if your question has been previously asked and answered there. The premium theme forums are at http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/ with separate sections for each theme. http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/avid/
