New Blogger Seeks Tips and Ideas

  1. Hello Everyone,

I'm new to blogging and this is my first blog! I've given an intro post, in case anyone comes across my blog, but I plan to really start posting this weekend. Before I go "live" (I think that is blogger speak) I was wondering if anyone could check out my blog and recommend any widgets, functional tips, general tips or any advice you think a new blogger should know.

    Thanks in advance!

The blog I need help with is apinchofsweet.wordpress.com.

  2. You can always try a forum search or http://learn.wordpress.com there are tons of suggestions here already.

  3. I actually already used that site to initially make blog, I was just didn't know if there were extra widgets or design things that people with more experience may know about.

  4. How are you doing Amluhetti. I am new to blogging as well. I would recommend that you read through o-hero blogger and follow the ten steps. It really got me focused and motivated. I feel like I am on my way to being a hero blogger. ;- I will check out your blog and would love for you check out my blog and for you to comment. Glad to have made the connection with you.

  5. Moved to "questions" forum:
the "ideas" forum is meant for adding technical suggestions for themes, widgets, and shortcodes for WordPress staff.

  6. Hi amluchetti
I would go over to the 'off topic' forum and look for the rate the above users blog, see what they think there and also ask for some idea. Most definately do a forum search because like raincoaster said there are so many ideas already here.
Happy Blogging and oh don't forget to after you go 'live' to post your url in the showcase forum to try and get some hits.

  7. The main page in support documentation for widgets and sidebars is here. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/ If you go to that page and click the link for any widget listed you will arrive on a page that clearly describes what the widget is for and how to install it on your blog.

If you need help with attracting traffic to your blog you can start here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-more-views-and-traffic/ and http://en.support.wordpress.com/five-ways-to-get-featured-on-freshly-pressed/ Thereafter you will find the search box is full of tips.

In blogging content is king and marketing is queen. If you write high quality original content and promote it then the result may be an increase in organic traffic, or not. If it’s not easy to locate your content in search engines then there will be no increase in new traffic. Thus, what determines success is two things:

    * whether or not your content is found, and
    * whether or not the readers who do find it become subscribers.

It’s important to invest time into finding the correct niche for your blog and formulating your goals. It’s likewise just as important to examine your blog in terms of growth models.

In the final analysis, all bloggers need to focus on creating relationships with other bloggers by leaving meaningful comments on their blogs, and by encouraging “organic” traffic that translates into a faithful blog readership for your own blog by responding to the comments you get.

    (1) Don't play hide and seek with search engines. WordPress.com makes search engine verification easy. The easy to follow step by step instructions for registering and verufying your blog with Google, Yahoo and Bing can be found in the WordPress.com Support Documentation at the Webmaster Tools link. http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

    (2) Search engine optimization, is the strategy and process of increasing the amount of visitors to a site by making structural changes to the site and the content in it that result in the site ranking high in search engine results. The higher a site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user who has been using a search engine to locate material of interest to them.

    (3) There are twenty five steps all bloggers can use to increase targeted traffic to their blogs. The steps are found in this post and you will find they are internally linked to tutorials http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2009/01/15/twenty-five-steps-to-increase-blog-traffic/

    Hope this helps.

  10. Thanks to everyone for the good advice so far!

  11. @amluchetti
You're welcome from me but I don't know what you mean by - so far. When it comes to applying the advice your have received in the thread to your blog there's enough to keep you busy for 6 months. :)

  12. Oh I certainly know that! I said "so far" in that right now I'm happy to have the info. But months from now when I still feel my blog is lacking or that I'll never have it perfect, I'm sure I'll be wishing for bliss in ignorance

  13. LOL :) You made me smile. Blog on lady !

  14. LOL - made me laugh too!

@TT - Question - what is a blog carnival? I suppose I should google it, huh? :) Will do that right now!

  16. @harrythehandyman - wait and try my moon pies and I may change your opinion

I think it's very good that you have an About page set up. Not writing one is a mistake a lot of new bloggers make. People are curious to know about where the content on the blog is coming from. Secondly, I really like the general feel of the blog because the minute I arrived on the homepage I got a sense of what your blog was about. The only criticism I would give is that it's a bit difficult to read the text in your post because it is centered. Other than that, enjoy yourself and make sure to stick with it.

  19. @amluchetti
After you have created an archive of content > Blog carnivals > See here > http://blogcarnival.com/bc/p_about.html > http://blogcarnival.com/bc/faq.html

  20. @amluchetti
The header on your free theme Connections blog looks like it came from this Premium ie. paid Theme > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/pretty-young-thing/ Did you get permission from the theme designer to use it?

  21. @amluchetti
    More advice:
I agree with unguiltypleasures. You need to create an About page.
    (1) Write an appealing profile (About page)
    (2) Write a concise and informative blog description (About page)
    (3) You also need a short effective tagline Settings > Reading
    http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/06/22/creating-an-effective-blog-tagline/
    (4) Verify your blog ownership with the major search engines > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
    (5) Then you need to create content -- lots of content and categorize and tag it properly. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/10/blogging-tips-tag-to-increase-traffic/

  22. looks great! and now that I'm starving... what timing! I agree though, an "about" page is a good idea.. I'm still new to this too (well, new to WordPress) but it's a great community with lots of helpful ideas.
