Has the dashboard changed? I have three huge empty boxes uselessly taking up space, while the dashboard tools are mere icons - I can only see what they are by mousing over them. What is the point of the empty boxes? I'd send you a screenshot but I don't see way way of attaching one here.

Click on "Screen Options" at the top on the right side of the screen to get the drop down - then see if things link "Stats" are checked or not - check the boxes you want to have show.
I did that and changed the number of columns, but it's still a lot of wasted space and I really would like to have more than just icons on the left. I liked it before, with the dashboard tools labeled so I didn't have to mouse over them to identify them. Do you know why this got changed?

Dashboard > far left column of icons > scroll to the very bottom and locate this link > Collapse Menu and click it.
