New gallery features & EXIF data

  1. The changes to the carousel have now rendered it useless to display photos on my blog. I have a laptop, and I can not longer see those huge titles/captions that are stuck all the way at the bottom of the screen, since the photos are now also huge and take up all the space, and I wonder if anyone at wordpress thought to test this on a small monitor? Why did you roll it out when there were so many problems?
Not only have these changes made it impossible for me to use the gallery going forward for my photos, the changes have now, of course, retroactively broken all of my posts on this blog. And, as someone else pointed out, changing the text from "permalink" to a more understanding "View full-size image" is too little, too late for those of use who already told all our users/readers to click on the Permalink.
Plus, there's a bug, I guess, so that the changes aren't even completely working: yesterday's post, which was fine when I posted it yesterday, now has most of the photos with this captions problem ... but not all of the captions are broken, some still appear under the image in small print.. You can see the problem I see now here in the gallery in this post: http://22tue.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/get-thee-to-a-winery-museum/ (the first few photos are fine, the rest are broken in that I can't view the captions on my laptop).
More troubling is this post: http://22tue.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/rambling-round-venetian-waters/#jp-carousel-3623 - the gallery photos are clearly being cropped, since my copyright at the bottom left is cut off.
I have used wordpress for many years, and recommended it to others, even though I wasn't happy about the carousel when it was first rolled out. However I have adjusted my posting style to accomodate it since I had no other choice, and some of my readers liked the animation slideshow effect. But you have now completely broken even the carousel's the animation feature: if you click on the last photo in the gallery (from the blog page) to start the carousel, then click on the right arrow the animation to switch photos is completely messed up.
I would join with all the others on this forum to ask that you revert the carousel until you have fixed the features and tested them before you roll them out.

  2. I forgot to mention that clearly WordPress has listened to the complaints about the Exif info being displayed, since I found a Settings>Media>Image Gallery checkbox that allows you to turn that off. Yay. However, it would be nice to have had that turned *off* by default on all existing blogs, instead of my having to go back and do that manually.

  3. +1 for giving an option to turn off the Exif feature.

  4. As I mentioned previously, you may continue to see things change in the carousel as we fix bugs, add options, and finesse the design. We've already added an option to hide EXIF data, as clfoto noted, and more options are in the works. We'll make an official announcement on http://en.blog.wordpress.com when it's complete. In the meantime, we ask for your patience; we're working to add much-requested features to the carousel in a way that hopefully everyone can enjoy. :)

  5. @iammattthomas
Will you be adding an option to disable the Carousel?

  6. @timethief — No plans for that.

  7. @iammattthomas
    Thanks for the confirmation.

on the carousel, can wordpress add a link to the image, as well as the jpg.

    such as on http://christopherfabbri.wordpress.com/links/portraits-1987-2006/#jp-carousel-23524

can wordpress offer a link that would take us to this link, in our images:

    http://christopherfabbri.wordpress.com/links/portraits-1987-2006/carla/

    thankyou!

The blog I need help with is christopherfabbri.wordpress.com.

  9. As iammattthomas said above, EXIF display is now optional. If you wish to hide EXIF display, you can find it in your Dashboard under Settings>Media >Image Galleries.

    @clfoto-

More troubling is this post: http://22tue.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/rambling-round-venetian-waters/#jp-carousel-3623 - the gallery photos are clearly being cropped, since my copyright at the bottom left is cut off.

The Carousel adjusts the size of the photo to the screen display. So if, for example, you go to full screen on the photo you mentioned was cut off, you'll see the copyright watermark.

    @christopherfabbri

can wordpress offer a link that would take us to this link, in our images:

That's what the earlier "Permalink" did. Unfortunately it's been removed from the Carousel. However, all the information that was available on that page is now available in the Gallery Carousel.

While the changes to the Gallery Carousel fill certain needs for photographers, as per the earlier thread when the Carousel was introduced in November, many people have also used Galleries and Attachment pages for tutorials and the changes to the Gallery Carousel don't address their need of seeing both the image and the tutorial instructions at the same time. Hopefully this can be addressed somehow.

  10. @clfoto — Also, regarding this:

More troubling is this post: http://22tue.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/rambling-round-venetian-waters/#jp-carousel-3623 - the gallery photos are clearly being cropped, since my copyright at the bottom left is cut off.

Like justjennifer mentioned, resizing your browser window will usually take care of this problem. But I can confirm that it's a bug and that it'll be fixed before we announce the new carousel.

How do we get the permalink back?

    thanks for your time

  12. @christopherfabbri- When the Carousel was first introduced, many of us added a notice at the top of our Gallery posts that it was possible to right click on the first thumbnail and open the link in a new tab/window. That still works.

But whether TPTB will bring back the Permalink in the Carousel is a good question, which only Staff can answer.

  13. Has anyone else experience the problem of clicking on the image thumbnail and instead of Carousel opening, the page with the full size image opens?

It keeps happening to me randomly. I guessing it is some sort of bug in the programming.

Also WordPress, thank you for making the EXIF optional.

  14. @laurenflotte-please give a direct link to a post where you see this is happening, starting with http://

  15. @justjennifer

    The link is http://laurenflotte.com/in-the-spiritual-realm/
But it doesn't happen every time, just randomly

Also, any updates on removing the comment section on the Carousel?

  16. Hi guys,

after playing around with "title" a little bit I just found out that if you use _ (underscore) as the title, nothing will appear underneath the picture in the carusel. Of course, if you hover over the preview with your mouse the underscore will also show, but for the moment this is a acceptable "emergency solution", if you don't want the title to be shown.

  17. 21forward can you please give us a direct link to a post/page with a Gallery where you see this happening? Starting with htttp://

    Here you go:

    http://twentyoneforward.com/2011/08/21/bath-bristol-york/

Notice on the post page you can only comment if you have logged in (either by wordpress, twitter or facebook) but in the image carousel anyone with an email can post. I actually like the new commenting system on the image carousel, but I only want those logged in to post.

  18. Please make the carousel comment feature optional.

  19. The cropping of the bottom of the image in the carousel is still not considered fixed, right? Thanks.

  20. Could you just leave it like it was before this ''improvement''?
I didn't choose the carousel, to see my pics cropped after I uploaded hundreds of them.

  21. iammattthomas said above that the cropping issue is a bug.

But I can confirm that it's a bug and that it'll be fixed before we announce the new carousel.

  22. Ok, thanks.

  23. @iammattthomas
Thanks for confirming that cropping of thephoto is a bug. Resizing the browser window doesn't help fix the problem, of course, as that resizes things in the window (on the page). Resizing the brower window is separate from having a photo cropped within its own element on the page (which should *never* be done automatically by the wordpress carousel). I'm hoping you guys fix the bugs you introduced into the carousel soon. Perhaps you could in the meantime add a "bypass" carousel option so that the gallery would just go to the full-size pages (and we could all stopping nagging you about the changes to the carousel while you work out the bugs. ;-)) Thanks.

  24. OK, I see that instead of fixing the cropping problem in carousel, you are busy adding new unuseful features like ''load more posts''. When I click on ''load more posts'' the blog shows the last together with the previous post. I don not need that. Not all PC's are enough fast to load quickly 2 posts.
If your goal is to convince me to leave wordpress you almost succeeded.
    Thank you.

  25. Please also see this thread, there seems to be an issue with the comments on the gallery.

  26. When will the missing bottom issue be resolved?

  27. Probably after I quit wordpress.

  28. @dorintibulca
The "Load more posts" issue is not the responsibility of the Staff member who is posting here on the carousel, gallery and image related issues. Other Staff members have been introducing “infinite scroll" to themes — a site wide change. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/to-infinity?replies=137
    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/to-infinity-and-beyond/
See here for Disabling Infinite Scroll on your WordPress.com Blog http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/03/16/disabling-infinite-scroll-on-your-wordpress-com-blog/
Note that "disabling" the feature (when you use footer widgets) simply changes it from loading automatically to loading via the "Load More Posts" tab, and you can't disable that "Load More Posts" tab from appearing without the Custom Design upgrade.

  29. The carousel just keeps getting worse and worse. I finally decided to just add a click "permalink" to each page to make sure someone sees my info. That's very much needed in my case, I wish I just had a photoblog, which is what wordpress wants everyone to have apparently. And now they took away the permalink. I hated the permalink, and now want it back just because it's better than what they have now. This is getting stupid. I went to wordpress to make my site clean and simple, now visitors can click on an image and know nothing about it. The info is too far down the page. I really hate the wordpress developers. I'm about to go back to dreamweaver so I can have some control. If I finally find a work around to avoid the carousel, who knows when they might add a "feature" that will make all my hard work useless.... again.

  30. @marccalvary, I'm so sorry to hear you're frustrated! As iammattthomas mentioned, we're working through the past carousel feedback we've received and making updates with that feedback in mind. A lot of people were opposed to the "Permalink" links before. In any case, there are in fact bugs to work out, and so clear and specific feedback is appreciated—especially feedback that includes links and screenshots. We won't be able to make every request happen (since some of it's conflicting!), but know that we are continuing to work on it.

Regarding the text being too far down on the page, note that captions should appear just below the image unless it exactly matches the title (without special characters) and in that case the caption isn't shown.

Updates are still being made, so please stick around and continue to post specific feedback with links, screenshots, and clear explanations of any problems you find. Thank you!
