New Interface is Confusing

  1. The new interface is a huge step backwards.
What used to be intuitive is now complicated.
What used to be right at my fingertips I now have to find buried deep down.
    Let's move forward, not back.

Being more specific may help the designers make changes?

Also, they have a guide that helps explain the changes:

    http://support.wordpress.com/wordpress-27-changes/

  3. It might be useful to read through this:
    http://support.wordpress.com/
(which is found on the "help" button on the top right of your dashboard)

Changes are difficult, but this new version is really quite nice because you can arrange many things to suit yourself. Once you get used to it, I think you'll find it less complicated than before.

Anyway, there is no going back.

  4. norberthaupt, I agree with you about a few of the changes. I'd prefer it if the dashboard options weren't set up in a long list down the left hand side, which means for slower searching, more scrolling.

Also, what's happened to the click to enlarge feature with posted pictures? I really liked that because it meant pics could be posted as thumbnails (taking up less page space) but readers who wanted to see a pic in more detail could choose to click on it to view it at full size on another page. Can't we bring that one back, pretty please?

Before you click Insert into Post make sure to click the File URL button to set the link URL. After doing this once, the setting will be remembered.

  6. (but the new dashboard does look visually better!)

  7. Many thanks, that workd! :D

  8. In Spanish they call this sort of thing a haberdasher's drawer where, if you look long enough, you will surely find what you are looking for, a red button, a safety pin, or an amulet of the Virgen de los Impossibles.

Maybe the idea behind the changes was to discourage writing and encourage media publication.

Let's pray that the HTML people will survive in their mini microspace. I remember I once saw the discussion groups of MSN where the space allowed for writing was the size of a postage stamp.

haberdasher's drawer is such a great analagy, cantueso. It's like the designer knows where everything else is in the drawer, but users are at the mercy of finding the now not visible forum link & support link to come to the creator for answers....

  10. I like the new dashboard. Try to explore A LITTLE BIT and you'll find what you're looking for. It's only the matter of habit, once you get used to it everything will be easier.

    I love your gravatar, yohanesniko!

  12. "haberdasher's drawer" :)

...reminds me of one of those hidden object games :D

I don't really have time to "look" for everything I need - I need it there, where it should have been.

If I could still get windows live writer to work with the new update I probably wouldn't be complaining about the new dashboard since I seldom see the dashboard...now that WLW won't work with the new update (okay, I haven't figured out how to make it work with the new update) I have to use the dashboard and it's become annoying fast (only because I don't generally use it all).

Well, it is Sunday (here)...maybe instead of complaining I could start finding what I need...

  13. diamondfistwerny: it's really nice that you see the analogy. However, I mean, really, your nick, you would not mind my saying that it is far from unforgettable, would you?

Cantueso, people often zone in on my nick :P It's not what many might think :P

  15. @graceystinson: Where exactly is "there, where it should have been"? Didn't you also have to "look" for some things in the old dashboard when you first started blogging?

  16. thelifeofmarkwhitecotton

On the old dashboard. Looking meant moving your eyes around the screen to find what one was looking for. On the new one, a person has to scroll to find it. It's an extra step. On the old dashboard, things were not hidden several levels down (for the most part). For example, "Forums" "Support" "Sticky Note" "Password Protect" ad nauseum

  17. @diamondfistwerny: If the old dashboard was so, then why did we have the innumerable questions in the forum on where is this and where is that?

The sticky option, in particular, got buried for a very good reason. (If you're not aware of it, I can tell you.)

I know the reason, and I believe that's why SUPPORT/FORUMS got buried too. Which answers your first question, doesn't it. Listen panag, I ain't gonna haggle with you. It's actually working on my last nerve. Please find someone else to challenge; or whatever it is you're supposed to be doing (short of helping commenters in the forum).

at 1tess Oh Hamlet! I love me some Hamlet!

  21. The new layout obliges me to write and finish my draft off-line, because the "save" button is hidden in the "publish" drop-down menu which covers up my toolbar, so that saving while writing becomes very elaborate, each time meaning three or four clicks -- or how many?

However, this may be just my own little issue, because I write in two or three languages, can never say anything spontaneously, need to check the dictionary and Google and rewrite the same sentence about ten times.

Stare at it for a couple of hours. Click every button a dozen or so times. It will then eventually start making sense.

  23. quote: @graceystinson: Where exactly is "there, where it should have been"? Didn't you also have to "look" for some things in the old dashboard when you first started blogging?

Only long enough to get it set up - after that I used an off-line blogger to write and publish which meant little or no interaction with the actual dashboard.

That no longer works with the new update, hence the need to use the (ugh) dashboard.

  24. @cantueso: I'm afraid I don't understand your post. The "Publish" module is not a drop-down, "Save Draft" only takes ONE click, and you don't need it anyway because there's a minute by minute autosave function. And what do you mean by "publish menu covers up toolbar"?

@Gracey: Isn't that a bit unfair? You're judging 2.7 with Live Writer being your sole criterion? (Unfortunately I can't try finding out what's wrong with WLW, as I'm on a Mac, but maybe it is that WLW hasn't been updated yet. It's not WP's job to make its new version compatible with assisting applications: it's the other way round.)

Gracey and Cantueso. I can tell you're frustated. I don't have an answer for ya. But having a volunteer tell you that your frustrations and views are 'unfair' rather than helping ya. I'd contact support and have them address the problem directly. No reason for anyone to be harped just cuz there not as ecstatic with the changes as some others. The bottom line is you're trying to 'fix' things in your own way. I'd contact support directly.

Hey, pagag - we're not going again. This has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU although you seem to think it does. Has the person's question been resolved? NO. They should contact support rather than be barraged by another volunteer's opinion.

Let's hope that Raincoaster's request for PM comes through. Cuz I'm tired of you tracking me down and arguing with me Panang. The staff said to cool it. I think they should contact support. Their problem hasn't been resolved, and you're still hijacking threads; trying to prove G_d knows what with me. Like I said yesterday, Let me go, I've already done that with you. Peace

1tess, pack behavior is not a pretty thing; nor is it something that I would've ever expected from you. But you seem to be doing it. The people's questions have NOT BEEN ANSWERED, take personal allegiances out of the forums. Thanks
