New to WordPress but good with websites and graphic design so had a question. If I use a theme and then customize it so drastically that it is barely recognizable from the WordPress theme, is there anyway on the footer that I can mention my name? Or anything like thar?

You can use a text widget and position it with CSS editing but you cannot remove any footer credits at all. I recommned reading this entire section so you recognize the limitations > Custom Design > Frequently Asked Questions

You can also use CSS to add to either the beginning or end of the existing footer credits also. using :before and :after and content declarations.
