Newbie need help...HELP! (and where do you hide your phone number?)

  1. I've been wasting money with Godaddy, from whom I bought my domain name and hosting. I also started a blog on WordPress using the same domain name. The blog is pretty much a mirror of the site. I wanted to just keep the blog and delete the site... if only I could get rid of the "wordpress.com" after hungadunga. Godaddy sold me a wordpress platform that would make that happen. I've been paying on that platform for two years and don't use it because I don't know how to. Is that what this premium upgrade is? If I get it can I just keep what is on my blog but have the simple url "www.hungadunga.com? It also bothers me there is no phone support. No human to whom I can talk!

The blog I need help with is hungadunga.wordpress.com.

  2. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name your desire must be available for purchase.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

See here for mapping a sub-domain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 - 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What's important during that stage is to be patient.

  3. This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. There is no phone support here and we Volunteers do not provide support by email. Volunteers answer the majority of questions posted into forum threads and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention.

NOTE: There's rarely ever a question posted here that has not already been asked and answered.

  4. Thanks Timethief for your help. I hope I can decipher your comments... sorry to say I know little about the terms ("mapping, subdomains," etc. ), yet I have had a blog on WordPress for years and have no trouble navigating it or creating content.

All I want to do is upgrade (which I may already have through GoDaddy) so that the URL does not have wordpress.com in it. That's all. No change in content. Just the URL. Problem is I also have a website with the same name (www.hungadunga.org.) GoDaddy tells me that when I get the WordPress thing figured out, they will delete my site which is what I want.

As for lack of phone support.... well, I like WordPress a lot, but it does not inspire confidence, unlike GoDaddy which provides great customer service and holds my hand while talking me through different processes. To me, customer service is paramount.

I prefer WordPress, but my life would be so much easier if I could talk to someone to help guide me. If that were the case, I bet I could have this thing done in fifteen minutes.

I certainly appreciate your help and that you took the initiative to respond so quickly.

    All the best,
    Your technically challenged blogger,
    Phil
