No Google maps in contacts info widget

  1. I am having issues with my sidebar contact info widget. I have two of those widgets in place on my sidebar. The top one displays a Google map and by the pin it says "Chalet Sunset" but nothing else. When I click on the pin no information is displayed. For some reason the second widget has a blank Google map. I have tried deleting and reinserting the widget many times to no avail. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this issue? Thnx in advance.

The blog I need help with is sharemock.wordpress.com.

  2. I've seen that issue before, if I recall correctly it was that Google Map can't seem to provide the address used, I would try the address in a different format.

  3. Hi sharemock,

It looks like there were a couple extra blank lines underneath the address in the first Contact Info widget, and that was confusing Google Maps. I deleted those lines, and now the map is displaying as expected.

In the second widget, I think it is an issue with the address itself. When I search Google Maps for 425 South Broadway, it gives me a result at 425 Broadway (no "South" in the address). Is this also correct? You may want to try checking the address in Google Maps to make sure it displays the map as expected and then update the widget with that address.

Please let me know if you have any trouble getting either widget to work properly.

  4. Can you be a little more exact as to how you deleted the extra lines? Widget still not working.

Thank you very much supernu for your suggestion, and rachelmcr for your assistance. I went to my site and saw the improvement you made (rachelmcr). I was excited and pleased. I edited the address & cut out the 'South'. I am really frustrated for messing it up. All I did was add a few more info in the widget and the problem came back again (blank maps). I tried going at the beginning and end of the address lines and backspaced and deleted (the keyboard keys) to get rid of any extra lines but to no avail. So all in all rachelmcr, you fixed it but I messed it up and don't know how/can't seem to replicate what you did.

  5. Can you be a little more exact as to how you deleted the extra lines? Widget still not working.

Hm, it looks like there's a new problem. When I looked at your widget the first time, there were two blank lines under the address (as if someone hit the Enter/Return key twice below the address). Those blank lines aren't there this time around.

However, I noticed that in the first address there isn't a comma between the city and state (Culver City CA). Can you try putting a comma in there and see if it works? Google Maps can be very picky, so little details like this can sometimes make a difference.

You can also try this approach: Search for the address in Google, and copy how Google formats the address in the search results. Because the map in the widget comes directly from Google Maps, you will see the best results if you copy the exact address format that Google uses.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue for you — if not, I'm happy to keep looking into it!

  6. Thnx rachelmcr - Your advice is golden - yet I am having no improvement with the second widget below the Culver City address widget. I am stumped. I mean, the map is not even there. I tried the same approach for the the top widget but to no avail. As always, I appreciate the assistance.

  7. I see what you mean! I noticed that there is an extra space at the end of the address in your second widget. Can you try deleting any spaces that come after the zip code in that address and see if that fixes the problem?

If that doesn't solve the map problem for you, please let me know and I'll keep working on it. :)

  8. IDK what I'm doing wrong but I did what you, rachelmcr, suggested. Still the map area is completely blank. I clicked on the address link and the map came up completely wrong in Google (but I had previously copied the address exactly as it is on Google maps). I'm sure you're probably as frustrated as I am but if anyone can figure this out, I would appreciate the assistance, everybody.

  9. It's entirely possible that you aren't doing anything wrong — this is a pretty finicky widget! However, I haven't been able to reproduce this exact issue when testing it. Can you try deleting this widget and then creating it again from scratch? That worked for me when I tried it on a test blog.

If the map doesn't appear when you recreate the widget, please let me know and I'll keep testing to see if I can find the source of the problem here.

  10. "I haven't been able to reproduce this exact issue when testing it."
I am stumped. I deleted the widget and created it from scratch - minus the title SHARE! Downtown. Still completely blank. The only difference is that the link works this time. I must be doing something wrong (But what could it be? Ughhhh!)

  11. Hi there, I was able to replicate this issue on a test site when adding two contact info widgets. The second map doesn't appear.

The widget appears to be designed to work correctly only when a single one is used on a page. I will report this to our developers so they can investigate. Thanks for your patience - I'll keep you posted here if I have news.
