Notification icon never stops notifying

  1. This notification icon in the upper right corner (the star) keeps notifying about the same likes again and again. Every time I go to another page here on WordPress, it lights up again as if there were new notifications when there arent any.

The blog I need help with is aditixpictures.wordpress.com.

  2. Thanks for reporting this issue. I tagged this thread for
a Staff follow up. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

  3. Will you please check this page and scroll down to "Likes"?
    https://wordpress.com/#!/notifications/

  4. I am on that page now. Is there something I am supposed to do there?

  5. If you scroll down and click "likes" do you find any there?

  6. Oh dear! I just realized you mean the likes on your posts and not your own likes on other blogger's posts. Please forgive me for being dense and wait for Staff to help you.

  7. Yes, there is a never ending scroll of old likes, the newest one at the top.

  8. Yes, it`s about the likes and all the other notifications on both of my blogs.

  9. It seems to be fixed for the moment.
    Thank you :-)

  10. Hooray! It's fixed now. Do let us know of it happens again.

  11. Hi

This bug keeps coming back. Its all right for about a couple of hours after you fix it and then its the same again.

  12. I'm sorry to hear that. Will you please try some troubleshooting and report back so we can eliminate any browser related issues?

If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode that makes it render as IE7 and IE7 is not supported. To disable see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies and JavaScript enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
    http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

    4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

This bug keeps coming back. Its all right for about a couple of hours after you fix it and then its the same again.

In addition to the information timethief mentioned, can you also let us know if you receive any new notifications in between when it's all right and when the issue comes back for you?

I've been having this problem as well. I hope it is ok to tack my issue onto this one. The OP describes what I have been seeing. It is ok for a time, but then others when that last notification keeps showing up after clicking to new pages within WordPress.

I have enabled HTTPS, I use Firefox 21, third-party cookies and javascript enabled. I haven't cleared cache, so will try this.

I will let you know what happens the next time.

  15. Hi again

This doesnt seem to be a browser issue. I use chrome, the third party cookies are enabled and I clear my cache on regular basis. Clearing the cache has no effect on this bug (I tried that before I went to the forum).

Its good to know that I am not alone about experiencing this bug.

I havent had any notifications for the last couple of days, so I cant see if this is still going on now.

Perhaps somebody could "like" something on one of my two blogs, so that I could see if the bug is still there.

  16. I clicked the like on your Mollys post here http://aditix.wordpress.com/2013/06/06/molly-poecilia-sphenops/

  17. Thank you. It seems to be all right right now. I hope it stays this way this time.

I will let you know if this comes back.

    :-)

  18. You're welcome and my fingers are crossed for you. :)

I had not received a notification for a few days, but today I have one for a new follower. After clicking on it, the symbol turned grey, but visiting other pages within my Dashboard, it shows up orange again.

I clicked on the notification symbol a second time, and after a few more clicks within my Dashboard it is remaining grey. Maybe it just needs a little time to stick??

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to click on the notification itself (for example, the message telling you who followed your blog) to mark it as read and not just the notification icon in the navigation bar. As long as you have unread notifications, the notification icon will turn orange to let you know.

  21. Clicking on the notification itself doesnt help at all - it still keeps turning orange everytime I go to another page.

It only stops if I click the back arrow on my screen (top left corner) and go back to the page where I first saw that particular notification. It then stops notifying until there is a new notification and then the same starts again.

If you can answers a few questions about what is happening, that will help me troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Do you have third party cookies enabled?
    2. If you click your notifications and then stay on the same page, does the notification icon turn orange again?
    3. If you click your notifications and then refresh the page in your browser, does the notification icon turn orange again?
    4. When you go to another page, if you click the notification icon there does it stop turning orange? Or does that only work if you go back to the page where you first saw the notification?
    5. Can you provide screenshots of what you are seeing? (Images of before, during, and after you click the notifications would be very helpful.) You can upload a screenshot to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service such as Snaggy.
  23. Hi again

    1. Yes, the cookies are enabled.

    2. No, if I click the notification the star stays grey until I go to another WordPress page and then it turns orange again.

    3. Yes. When I refresh the page, it turns orange again.

    4. No, it does not stop turning orange if I click it on another page. Going back doesnt seem to help anymore either, it keeps turning orange wherever I go.

    5. Unfortunately I cannot provide screenshots. What do you hope to see on them? The star is orange. When I click it, it turns grey. When I go to another page, it turns orange again.

  24. Hi there, I was hoping to see a screenshot to check whether an unread notification might be causing this issue, or if it is something else. Here's what I mean:

When you first get a "like" notification, the orange star pops up like this: http://cl.ly/image/1q0v3p0L110K

When you click on the star, you see a list of your notifications. Your new, unread notifications will have a blue dot next to them, like this: http://cl.ly/image/1W0l1P3A3q3V

If you close the notification list at this point, the orange star may appear again. This is because the new notifications are still considered to be unread. If you click on an unread notification (one with a blue dot next to it), you will see more detail about that notification: http://cl.ly/image/0w1f0N2C1C0W

This marks the notification as read. If you open your notification list again, you'll see that the blue dot next to it has gone away: http://cl.ly/image/3e393U1O2t3j

As long as none of the notifications in that list have blue dots next to them, the notification icon should stay grey. Can you check to see if you have any unread notifications in your list?

  25. Yea it's Still doing it for me also. http://www.applecidervinegarhub.org

  26. Hi Rachel

Sorry for not providing screen shots but I hope that me answering all the questions helps.

I have read what you wrote earlier in this thread and I have been clicking the notifications themselves too, not just the icon. That doesnt have any effect, the icon still keeps lighting up as if the notification hadnt been read.
No blue dots in my list right now.

This bug doesnt seem to have anything to do with whether I click the notification itself or not. That icon does not light up because of some old, unread notifications but only about the very newest one and no others. And when there is a new notification again, it stops notifying about the previous one and starts notifying about the newest one again. Sometimes I can click the same notification 10 times and it still keeps notifying about the same, newest thing.

I just took a couple of screenshots, but when I went to another page within my dashboard, the notification icon remained gray. I did not think to take any before clicking the icon the first time but only did so after I went to another page after viewing the notification when it remained orange. And I did click on the actual notification, so the little blue dot goes away.

I do have to wonder why WordPress requires an additional click of the so-called unread notifications? In my case, I rarely have more than one like or follow at a time, so when I first click on the orange icon, I already see what I want to know. So in reality, it is not unread. :)

  28. @aditix, your answers have been helpful, but unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce the issue and I'm a bit stumped as to what might be causing it. I am checking with my team to see if anyone else is able to resolve this for you.

@thebirdingbunch, you mentioned that when you went to another page, the notification icon remained grey. Is this problem resolved for you, or does the orange icon persist when you stay on the same page?

Thank you for asking, rachelmcr. I think I mentioned above I do not receive notifications all that often, but the last time, it worked all right and the orange disappeared after clicking the notification. It did not come back when I visited any other page.
